loving it

MichelleWard Dont Steal This

You know that saying:  Do What You Love.  It goes hand in hand with Love What You Do.  From the same words is What Do You Love.  I love making real art, but I’m totally in love with exploring things digitally.  As I’ve said before, I’m self-taught, and I’m still working in PS DS.  What’s DS you say?  It’s my comical reference to DinoSaur era.  That would be PS 5.5.  I have a later version here but I’m reluctant to load it since I nearly passed out and threw in the towel when I made the switch from 5 to 5.5.  If you’ve seen the new Stampington publication Somerset Digital Studio (I don’t have a copy yet!) you’ll see I wrote a tutorial on making custom Photoshop brushes.  My apologies to those of you who have left the Dinosaur era and are working in a current version because the steps might not be exactly translatable – but hopefully you’ll still gleen some value in my tips.

So what’s my point today?  I guess it would be that having an interest in learning is just plain good.  Know what you love, and Do It.  I don’t know where I’m going with my digital skills but it really doesn’t matter – I’m learning many cool things that can be interpreted in my ‘real’ work, and I’ve been able to make graphics for myself and others that is not just playtime stuff, it’s a paying gig, so that’s something.  My other point would be that when you know what you love, and can spend time doing it, it doesn’t matter why or what for, ya know?  In looking back at the evolution of my digital playtime I realized that much of it can be blamed on my favorite band.  Yes, that’s what I said.  I can attribute my growth in developing my digital skills to HIM

If you aren’t an avid fan like me, you may not be aware that many bands have message boards.  When you participate on a board you have the option of creating an avatar and signature for yourself – graphics of a very small size that show up on your posts.  I’ve made a habit of not only making my own, but offering my services to other online friends on the board.  I also participate in the graphics contests that are posted monthly.  I can proudly say I won this month for designing a wallpaper below (meant for your computer desktop) and have won honors a few times over the years.

You may recall seeing the journal pages above – this time they have been layered, with text added.  I love the combination of real work and applied text.  It’s a great learning tool that leads to problem solving – like how would I get that text onto my page in the real world?  Toner transfer, carved lettering, printed transparency maybe?  Below is a partial portfolio of some of my messageboard graphics made for me and some friends, as well as assignments for the monthly contests.  It won’t look like much to you, but to me it represents the hours of homework learning how to manipulate images and text.  The canvases are so tiny you would hardly believe how much time they took – but to me it’s time well spent because it got me to where I am now.

Know what you love but haven’t tried it yet?  What are you waiting for?

This month we are Cutting It Out on the Street Team.  We are carving stamps and cutting stencils and sharing the results.  Soon I will post a tutorial on the stencils.  Interested in making a custom stamp?  Come play with us on the Street Team.  Congrats to Pam McClung who was the Top Hat Pick for the Pandora’s Box Crusade!

    Hi Michelle,
what a great post!! SOmetimes I think we are slow here in Europe, but I already have my copy of Digital Studio, you could borrow it from me if it wasn’t so far! I read your article (OFF COURSE) and I think that it is usefull anyway, there are so many versions of photoshop (I have PS elements for mac, has slightly less options but still MORE than enough for me). Those avatars…. THEY ROCK… You are so generous to create them for others. I am already busy with the MAKE IT YOUR OWN stamps for the crusade, so see you!!

Awesome as usual……My medium has been distressed parchment, handstamped stuff under glass and soldered, but Im so drawn to digital designs like what you have shown. I can see the images in my head, and want to know how to get them on that screen!!! Im supposed to be designing a tshirt for our local animal shelter (i know exactly what i want), but im dumbfounded as to how to do it. Can you recommend any tutorials for someone who has a problem, getting the work done from their head…to their hands?? Thanks so much…just LOVE your work!

OK, young lady… I have really good news for you! The jump from PS 5.0 to 5.5 WAS nuts… no one liked it… but may I dare say, I believe the jump from 5.5-7.0 won’t be so bad?!? Seriously… there was a recent post somewhere that talked about “making the leap” (I can’t remember where I saw it, exactly)… what excellent advice!!! I’ll bet you even received the book that came with PS 7.0, which I believe has all kinds of info inside re: “what’s new in 7.0″… I promise you’ll be fine… there was a huge change from 5.0-5.5, but subsequent version changes were much more about layers, histories, and browsers… the tool bar shouldn’t be too much different than you’re accustomed to. Honestly… make the leap… you’ll be glad you pushed yourself! wink, wink!

Your digital work is lovely! Good for you teaching yourself this craft and congratulations on taking the prize. I am just experimenting myself with PS – and its a handful to say the least. You have really developed a fine skill. I enjoyed this article – again – Michelle.

    Michelle –
As far as the messageboard graphics not looking like much….are you crazy?!?! They are fantastic. I love them all – I would love to cut them out and enter them into my journal!
Maybe some day when I am not working both my full time job and part time job MAYBE (and I mean maybe) I will try to work with graphics on the computer.
    You do inspire!!
    Until later,
    Judy

..oh wise and good looking Sage….
Thank you for a VERY poignant reminder….Teach Yourself. Crawling over the Broken Glass of Tried and True Experiments is the Best Way to learn down to your DNA.
I’m with Judy, if you think that the message board graphics don’t look like much, you’d better turn the volume down on your HIM collection, ’cause you are obviously frying your HUGE brain.
    Crawling back to Photoshop elements….
    You…as usual……ROCK.

You always make me smile with your enthusiasm, Michelle. Yes, you really do love what you do and do what you love! I’m going to check out the new magazine this weekend.

Hi Michelle, your message board graphics look real cool! I know from experience that small takes time too, and sometimes the format is the challenge. I used to design graphic “buttons” for a program, 16 x 16 pixels (not even the size of your thumbnail… and I managed to fit in a graphic illustration of a vacumer for the command “clean”
When I see your graphichs above, I can only agree; You rock – again! 😉

Michelle, Michelle, Michelle…..oh what a blissful post this was and OH, THE EYE CANDY of those avatars!!! Congrats on the win and would you believe, I just bought Photoshop Elements 6.0 yesterday, along with a laptop so I can “play” on my blog on my trip that’s coming up!!! Note to self…”buy the Somerset digital mag”! Why can’t we do as they did in the Matrix and sit in a chair and have all the relevant info “streamed” into our head in one hit! lol Love HIM…and you!

You are so right Michelle. I always get intimidated by the hugeness of it all and get really frustrated when I try and do something simple and cannot. I have been debating whether to get another laptop so I can spend downtime at work playing with photoshop. Of course I am gunning for the macbook air since i became a maccie in 2006 but pressing those buttons is the only way to really get the hang of it. Love your avatars. They are so so professional and having tried to enclose plain text in a textbox with immense difficulty, I know these have taken a lot of time and energy. I got the mag just to check out what you had to say and conquer my fear of the digital divide!! as usual YOU ROCK!! Wish i could spend all my days doing what I love, but I do most days love what I do.

That’s so awesome, you blogged about your win!!
I remember the daniel lioneye contest, your entry really did blow us away.
I always loved seeing people’s graphic work evolve as they continue to photoshop. Even when I look back over at the very first avatars I made compared to what I can do now, I always stop and go, “wow, I can’t believe what I can do now.”

HUGE congrats on the win! Girl, your art is so darned unbelievable. I am so in awe of what you do! I so wish I had your initiative to teach myself how to use PS. I have it, I have Elements as well but haven’t done a whole heck of a lot. Oh, I did teach myself to crop this weekend! Woohoo! Now, that was a big step! NOT! I am going right now to order the Somerset magazine with your article in it. I need all the help I can get. I’ve been tearing out digital art articles for a year…today, I am going to put them into some sort of order….then….I am going to learn! Even if it kills me! How can I not with such beautiful inspiration pouring from your mind and hands! Oh Girl, I love the HIM layouts….that man is GOERRRRGEOUS! I absolutely love, “I did it all just for HIM”….omigosh, it’s incredible!

Oh Michelle, I can’t tell you how timely and inspiring your post was for me. I tore out a page from a magazine the other day that said “Must Change Attitude” and put it on my wall. For me it meant (among other things) my aversion to all things technical. I miss out on so much including your crusades because I don’t even know how to send a picture to someone. An absolutely gorgeous post filled with incentive and encouragement and the proof that blogs can change lives. xox

Wow, your photoshop images are fabulous! I’m sure the band is flattered by your admiration, and the time it takes you to create things for fellow fans. Your workmanship shows. I love photoshop, and creating wallpapers and the like is SO time consuming. Bravo sister!

Michelle, I always love seeing your digital work!!! Anyone who has worked digitally knows how much time and effort goes into each piece. Talk about “dinosaurs”, I’m self-taught on PS Elements 2.0 and now have CS3. It’s quite a challenge, but I’m hooked on digital and will continue to evolve. Hope someday to approach your skill level!

Just stopping by for my daily inspiration & yay, there are the lovely sigs & avatars you made for me & it reminded me how we got to be friends. It seems like such a long time ago. One of the best things about being a fellow HIM fan was becoming friends with you, & I mean it from the bottom of my heart. 🙂

OH LORDY WOMAN. You just made my day with all that Ville! CONGRATS on your first place! The reason you are so successful, is because (I can’t spell) you do what you love and love what you do, and I am really working on that! The funny thing is, just before coming here, I finished a Ville stencil. I cannot wait to show it to you…I have to find some black spray paint first. I think I will have to change my heartagram board avatar…Paula

A)If you are in the ‘dinosaur’ stage , I must be the pondscum preceding it , and
B)the male image in ‘you are my heaven tonight’ would have made a great Lestat with a tiny bit of tweakage , and
C)this whole collection pretty much just Rocks.

How cool is that…just amazing michelle, love what you did there…would love to know how to do such things with photoshop…
Would love to get my hands on some of your designs…either…
