kirjakauppa

Huh?  Exactly.  Have you ever tried learning Finnish?  The only recognizable word for most of us is sauna.  Kirjakauppa is Bookstore.  If I was in Finland I would ask the hotel guy where to find a bookstore, or even better, a used bookstore.  (I already know where the concert venue is so I wouldn't have to ask about that.)  I'm on a quest to find a hymnal in Finnish.  I think it will be really clever to turn it into my HIM journal.  Recently some friends were in Finland and they visited a beautiful church – a hymnal was probably within reach…..I wonder what bad karma you would get if you stole one?

Laura alerted me to the Finnish bible on ebay, and that's when I found the English hymnal, which I will alter and settle with unless a Finnish one surfaces in the next few weeks.  When I was with Judi last weekend I scored the dictionary – it has tabbed letters, really cool.  Speaking of old books – I wrote a little story about books for Lisa, found on her second blog: Gypsy Bonfire

Speaking of second blogs, I've posted a new crusade on my Street Team.  Congrats to Hanna Andersson for being the Top Hat Pick for No. 28.

And back to my visit with Judi….had a blast!  We tried really hard to get a good myspace-type photo of ourselves and giggled 'til it hurt when we broke her glasses.   I've sworn to delete most of the photos, (incriminating evidence – too much valkoviini*) here's what is left:

So you need “virsikirja” in finnish? Just ordinary hymnal which people use in church? Not very big? And used if possible? It is piece of a cake here in Finland ; )

I can get you one, I think! Is hymnal bible kind of? Or no, it’s songs? We have a used thrift shop close to where I live and I think they have several book shelves with both Swedish and Finnish book!!!! Yay, I’m going to check this week. Yay!

Oh, come on! White wine is perfect for breaking glasses!!
I can’t attest to knowing how difficult Finnish is, but I tried learning Norwegian for awhile until my language book and one of the language disks got destroyed in a tragic Thrown Out the Window incident.

I’m just giggling looking at the evidence and the remembering my time in Helsinki, my girlfriend (Lutheran minister and whose husband refused to travel with us – he knew the trouble we would get it) and I went to the Church of the Rocks and sang the english version of all the songs while others sang in Finnish. What a hoot. The Finnish loved us for even trying. But, nope, I did not think to take (steal) a hymnal – bad karma! I have several Lutheran and Episcopal ones but all in English. You go girlfriend! Great idea.

Your rock star crush is leading you on a very creative quest. Did I tell you about my BFF who you remind me of? Well she is writing her first novel called, “Rockstar: A Romance.” When she was brave enough to let me see her first draft I had to show her your site. She took one look and said she thought you rock and that she has to get to know you. I’m sure she will be lurking lots. I think she will be starting a blog soon. I’ll get her hooked. May be she will be brave and you’ll get to meet her! I’ll let you know!
    Here’s to girlfriends!

    You are TOO clever!
Regarding Finnish, my best friend’s aunt is a linguist, and she insists that Finnish and Hungarian were brought to Earth by aliens. Only logical explanation. 😉

    Michelle,
This post inspired me to dig out my hymnal from my childhood. A Korean hymnal! Shows that music is the universal language because as long as you can read music, you could figure out what hymn you’re looking at. (I’ll have to sing Amazing Grace in Korean for you one day.)

All signs and several comments point to you getting that Finnish hymnal real soon! What a cool idea and we are all anxious to see what wonders you work in it. Even though the evidence was scarce (because of a sacred oath) it was great to see what a rollicking good time you had with one of your best buds. xoxo

Lord Have Mercy. You are a clever gal Miss Michelle! I can speak only a little German, after finishing COLLEGE German…I know another language is not in my realm of possibility. My girlfriend from Denmark can speak English, Danish, Swedish and Norwegian…but swears too that Finnish is bizarre to learn, she likened it to Russian. I can’t even decipher my family tree my Great Aunt gave to me as it is Norwegian. How sad I can’t be bilingual. I CANNOT wait to see what you do with that HIMnal! xoxo

Thanks so much for being the guest Storyteller on the Gypsy Bonfire…this one will be considered a classic. Like you. A YOUNG classic.
