I’ve been bad….

Mw_naughty_or_nice

I don’t have the tree up.  I haven’t started my cards (don’t even have the photo taken yet).  And everytime I’ve been out shopping I’ve gotten MYSELF something.  I could say that I’m doing my husband a favor by doing his shopping for me, right?  I spent the entire day wrapping and labeling, and getting packages ready to ship (so many loved ones who live far away!)  I was totally planning on making the trek to post office today when I got a call that school was let out early – snow and ice storm.  So I ran around picking up kids and pizzas and didn’t get the one thing crossed off my list I needed done today.  Drats!

I do have some good things to show you.  I just scored this book on ebay.  I have been trying to get a copy of this book for years.  It’s the same one my Mom still has and I swear it is magical.  You know when you see something from your past and the visual tips off powerful and sentimental feelings?  THIS book does that for me.  I love the illustrations.  I could lick them.  I wanted to grow up and have a home like this one with a tree like that one.  I am pleased the book is on it’s way to me so that I can tuck it away with the holiday stuff in January and then be delighted all over again every December when I come across it.

Yesterday I got Sam to sign 20 Chicken Soup books that we are giving as gifts.  He was so cute doing it – such a super star!

Jenny and I came across this dude making some spray art.  It was awesome to see him in action.  I’ve seen some youtube videos of guys doing this kind of thing but seeing him work the cans on the sidewalk was really cool.  I’m not interested in making this kind of art myself but I did pick up a few tricks and I had to buy a piece.  Yes, I’ll tell you about the spray tricks later.

Mw_nyc_sprayart

Some of you asked for a close-up of the yarn necklace Jenny made me – here it is, with her permission.  Someday I will show you the felted purse she gifted me with – when you see it you’ll know she GETS me.

Recently I had a kindness exchange with two women I have never met.  First is Jolene – what a sneak she was to surprise me with her cool tiles using my own artwork.  I think I made out better in the deal than she did. Jolene, do you honestly think I’ll be putting my coffee cup or diet coke on these?  Not.  Thanks for the surprise!

Mw_from_jolene

Next is from Marlynn Likens.  She visited Massachusetts and stayed in the Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast.  I not only scored brick dirt from the house, but this wonderful and thoughtful book too.  You can’t see it but my favorite part is under a picture of Lizzie is "What was she thinking?"  Again, I made out better in the exchange than she did.  (Looking forward to meeting you at the workshop in May!)

And now the Not So Good.  Not really bad.  More like bummers.

Mwmags

So you probably already knew House and Garden is over.  Do you also know Blueprint is done?  Done!  Come on!  I loved this one.  It was so refreshing to see edgier layouts and graphics.  I was doubley impressed that a Martha mag was so hip, (not that she’s incapable of being hip).  I’m so over every magazine looking like each other.  Aren’t you sick of it?  Let’s pick on Victoria.  I will admit I raced over to the site when there was an announcement that it was coing back and got in line to have one mailed to me.  I don’t know what I was thinking…..I guess I was hoping for a little update.  I was hoping they have been paying attention to what’s when going on since they went dormant.  I’m sure the die-hards are thrilled with this issue since it looks like any other Christmas issue they published.  There will be those that are so glad it hasn’t changed…..but I’m yawning.  Try Artful Blogging and Somerset Life.  I think they really hit the mark with a fresh approach – visually very appealing.

Mw_royalton

Another bummer:  So how can I rant about Victoria being stagnant and then turn on my heal and start a new complaint regarding change?  Is change good?  We say change is good.  But not always.  Not when it isn’t something we are ready for.  I guess we can convince ourselves of anything depending on how we choose to view it.  In this case I’m not saying that change is bad….it’s actually handsome.   But it’s not the same.  It left and I didn’t get a goodbye visit.  The renovation of the Royalton Hotel was a surprise.  I didn’t know it was coming so I was very upset.  The new look pays respect to the original lobby in that it still has a mystique because it’s dark and non-traditional.  Some of the views in the re-do make you feel like you are IN a Louise Nevelson sculpture.  That part was cool even though I wanted to hate it.

It certainly is a case of You Had To Be There back when The Royalton opened.  I think it was 1988.  The owners were Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager of Studio 54 fame, and it was designed – down to the very last piece of hardware, by Philippe Starck.  Swoon.   I spent a New Year’s Eve there.  I was engaged there.  It was OUR special place.  It’s part of my history.  I took Jenny there last weekend.  We had a terrific lunch, tucked away from the hustle of the street.  It is still The Royalton, just not royal blue.  I felt so strongly about it I had to write to Mr. Starck in France.  It won’t matter if I never hear from him – at least he’ll know he matters to me.

Gotta end on a good note.

Very often I’ll get emails asking how I do things on this blog.  "Slight Of Hand" is my answer.  I’m on post number 202, and it took a while to find my way.  Just look at the archives….proof that it took some time to hit my stride with figuring this out.  All my graphics are done in Photoshop.  I’m self-trained, and still use 5.5 (even though a sweet friend gave me a later version, I haven’t been able to make myself install it!)  I was curious about how to make things digitally and stumbled around and found out things through play and practice.  No magic tricks.  Just doing the work.  When I finally discovered custom brushes there was no stopping the fast train I was on.

I’m currently writing an article about brushes to be in the debut issue of Somerset Digital Studio.  If you bribe me enough I may share a tutorial here.  In the meantime I’ll leave you with a link to the font many have requested:

Bleedingcowboys

Found at DaFont.com.  Lots of great (free) fonts there.

I guess I’m not so bad….just procrastinating, and snowed in.  How much is checked off your to-do list?

Well the spray paint artist we saw in NYC inspired me more than I can say. Folks who can stretch limited resources with a drive to make it happen … to recruit the muses from the universe, to push oneself to create, and to force oneself to weather challenges … be it inclement weather, or envy-driven critics, or a modest income, or whatever … the strength of resilience and the will to become successful is totally inspiring. If I could give a gift to my children, it would be the will to survive, the eye of the tiger, the resilience to make it happen no matter what. No excuses.
In terms of the Royalton Hotel … it’s interesting because as someone who hadn’t ever set foot in it before, I thought what we experienced together was Lovely, with a capital “L.” Everything about it. But seeing your BEFORE pictures makes me pause to consider whether the design changes were appropriate. And having seen your reaction as one who had experienced the grandeur of the past and comparing it to the present … change is interesting, and at times heart-wrenching. I wouldn’t want what I saw not to exist but can totally see how once you have tasted the past, that the present can be bittersweet. Sweet and bitter. Like chocolate with sea salt. Does the process of evolution require painfully bittersweet life moments?

P.S., Sam’s a total star and you’re a star to help support your kids to become their best selves.

    good morning !
Yummy, so much to read on your blog…
Thanks for the photo of the necklace ( haven’t figured out yet how exactly she had done it, but it looks really nice : I also love the bright colors !)
Also thanks for the part in the blog on how to make your blog visual interesting with photoshop. I’m thinking of a bribe…just give me some time…
After your mail, I started playing with photoshop and yesterday I’ve been busy the whole morning scanning copyrightfree images and installing them as custom brushes. Incredible what you can do with it !
I bought 3 books with copyright free images ( stencil designs, ornaments and decorations,old-fashioned floral illustrations) and a book with 3800 (!!!) early advertising cuts 20 years ago when we were in London for our honeymoon trip.
Once in a while I looked in them just to enjoy all the beautiful drawings and now and then I used one to make a stencil of it to decorate my house.
What sources I have at hand now ! How many of those brushes can you install ?….( have to take vacation for a year I think…)
And when does Somerset Digital Studio comes out ?
In the meanwhile I try to learn from what I see on your blog ! ( If I use it in my blog, I surely make a link to your website to let everyone now where I found my inspiration !)
    greetings

Wow! Not so eloquent a comment but, sheesh Michelle…you know how to do a blog post! In all of the fascinating info and terrific photos (not to mention the photoshop wizardry!), the thing that caught my attention was your new book “The Night Before Christmas”. I can’t tell you what a fan I am! I adore this book and drag it out every Christmas. I memorized the whole book when I was a tiny girl. Maybe that’s why I love it so! You’re right the illustrations are magical! Thanks too for the font link…

I’ve admired Marlynn’s work for years and I was delighted to see her Lizzie Borden book on your site this morning… a little peeved that I had to see it on your sight rather than in person… but delighted nonetheless!
Marlynn mentioned that you’re teaching again. Any chance we can get you down here in the D.C. area??

Blueprint??? Oh no…I really like that magazine. Even have a subscription. Bummer. Sorry you were disappointed about the hotel. I know that sometimes the majic just isn’t there when you go back to a place with such fond memories. It still looks pretty nice though!!!

Oh how verrry disappointing Victoria was! I swear they have used that Christmas cover before. I’m curious about how much memory you have on your computer to run photoshop. smiles, andra

What a wonderful post…I enjoyed every minute of it! I too am slacking, haven’t mailed out Christmas cards yet…haven’t printed a photo of the kids…keep buying myself presents…now I think I need to buy myself photoshop! I have a magical book for me as well, it is Mrs. Beggs and the Wizard…it took my sister and I several years of searching to find it, and I think I have licked the pages! Ha! I will have to run out for a Chicken Soup book…maybe I can send it to you and have Sam sign it. All of my fave mags have been a disapointment in general, with the exception of the Somerset ones…what in the world? I loved Blueprint….creeps. Good luck with all of your wrapping and mailing and such….thanks for sharing all of your adventures with us! Paula

I have to comment in sections because there’s so much great stuff here! Thanks for the youtube links and others. I’ll be back here a lot to check everything out. But my first comment is about that guy with the spray paint. My brother bought a painting in Vegas a while ago, and when he described the process it sounded impossible. I said to him, there has to be a trick, because it’s not possible to do a panorama of Vegas strip in 10 minutes using spray cans. So now, I can check this out for myself!

Oh, that Lizzie Borden book. I’m so JEALOUS! Not only of that, but because Marlynn is going to be at your workshop?! very neato.

I know what you mean about sameness in magazines. I happened to see the Martha Stewart show when she announced the end of Blueprint, and she seemed not in agreement with it, or sad about it or whatever, but of course she never wants to say anything controversial so she just downplayed it.
I know nothing about periodical publication except that it seems to me that the necessity of delivering a publication at a specific time (monthly, for example) can take away from one of the goals of art, which is to re-vision the world or to order our chaos so that creativity thrives and we can connect by experience. How can this happen on a timeline? It seems like the nature of the beast, that there will be times when a periodical stagnates, and unfortunately, some of them just continue to stagnate because someone loses the fire to try to keep things moving. I dont’ know if this makes sense, but I just mean that a newsmagazine or a feature magazine can work on a schedule, but for art, I don’t know if a schdule fosters invigoration or envelope-pushing. I’m going to check out those issues you mention, here, Michelle. Thanks.

Lastly, I have to take issue with you on the subject of The Royalton.
Not enough details of that night.

How much is checked off my to-do list? About as much as you….. *grins*. I have today to do the housework plus make 2 mini books…hhhmmmm. Have not made a single Christmas card. Since we only moved a few weeks ago, I am still walking around saying “I can’t find my…..” (insert various art items in space) In particular, my apron. I know it is around here somewhere….
Snow and ice storms??? I have been sitting under the fan eating cold grapes and watching TV series on DVD – getting too hot to do much else in the middle of the day.
Thanks for sharing the font site… Can’t wait to have a look.

THe colors on these pictures are all so rich and bright and magical. I love coming here.
    And a question for you.
I had not heard about Blueprint Magazine being canceled. I was a big fan. And I had bought and already paid for a subscription as a gift. So what will happen to it now?
And I had been thrilled when Victoria was coming back, got the first issue and it was really boring and dull. Kind of sad.
    Oh well.
Looks like your having some holiday fun. Enjoy.

I’d like to respond to Chris’ interesting comments from above. I think it could be argued that art publications and their timelines can possibly take away from the very goal of art … which often gets created without a timeline. The idea of forcing O’Keefe or Picasso to finish a painting by a publication’s deadline sounds silly.
But on the flip side, I would say that artists (and writers, and designers of hotels, etc.) frequently welcome deadlines and timelines and order. It’s what ultimately allow us or force us to share what we create with others. And the benefits of sharing (which includes credit, attribution, recognition, income, inspiration for continued evolution of industry, etc.) are in many ways is the ultimate motivating force. For leaders of magazines, it requires being in touch with a community of artists where we know that pieces will get done in assorted times. And it’s up to the leadership to strategically use deadlines, intuition, and finesse to as you say, not lose the fire and keep things moving along and create the best forum for sharing. An art itself.

Oh my I just only found your blog! What terrific photos, ideas, thoughts, ramblings, everything! I spent an inordinate amount of time scrolling, reading and just having a merry old time! Did I have the spare time. NO! I have 100+ bars of homemade soap to wrap, but I feel this was time well spent. Thank you so much and a please have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!

What a packed post! It’s such a shame they renovated your favorite place. The new look is very warm and inviting, but it definitely is a 180 degree change. Very odd. The original style was so distinctive and modern, it’s strange that they would turn around and make it “classic.” I love both looks, but I can understand your feelings about it.
I do have to disagree with you about Victoria though. I’m one of the ones that wanted the old magazine back. Maybe it’s because it’s a thing of my childhood, maybe it’s because of my recently renewed interest in Victorian style, but I missed the Victoria of old. It always was THE showcase of Victorian items that are available today, and of Victorian style in a modern setting. There is a bit more they could do to update, but I’m pleased with the first issue. Especially that gorgeous spread featuring the garments from Tasha Tudor’s collection!
And I can totally sympathize with being hopelessly behind. All the stuff I was going to make? Nope! And I too have been doing more shopping for myself than for others. Hey, we’re just buying Christmas presents for ourselves, right?

  19. susanna Avatar

What a terrific, long post! Yeah, I haven’t finished writing my Christmas cards yet (maybe I’ll get Happy New Year cards next year…?)and I haven’t bought my husband his present yet AND we still haven’t picked up a tree. Sigh… 🙂
Look at Sam’s autograph! So cute! How awesome is that?! These books will make terrific gifts for family and friends this year.
And you did score with the presents. You have some talented readers and fans, Michelle. That Lizzie Borden book is really neat. And there’s a Lizzie Borden B&B?! Cool!
What do you mean House & Garden is done? It’s over, no more issues? And Blueprint, too?
I remember you describing to me the interior of The Royalton. Thanks for showing us the photos (before & after). I like the older version better, don’t you? The new interior certainly has a retro feel to it but it looks a bit too dark and dreary to me. I wonder if it’s worth a visit to see it in person…?
Anyway, I hope that you are having a good Monday, Michelle. Thanks for the good read today! We’re going to have to get together for a movie or a coffee soon. Whaddyathink?

Michelle – thanks for highlighting my (now yours) Lizzie Borden Book. It was a joy to make for you and you needed something to go with the brick dirt! For anyone who is interested – The Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast (Museum) in Fall River, MA, is absolutely outstanding and worth the trip to experience it. I stayed in the parents bedroom and my traveling friends stayed in Lizzie’s and Emma’s bedrooms. The John Morse Room (where the stepmother was murdered), of course, is in high demand. Just google Lizzie B & B – the owner, Leiann is great. The small museum behind the house is fun and so many cool items to buy. I love my apron with Lizzie’s portrait! We arrived on a Wed night and had the treat of a seance at 10 pm following our private tour of the house. FUN!
