In another life…..

…I would have liked to have been a Window Dresser.  Back in my interior design days I got to prop out model condos….it was the closest I got to the fleeting fantasticness.  I never got to witness Lisa’s store but I can imagine she had killer windows.  Before I show you some of the pictures from the Window Watching last weekend I want to remind you of two cool books on the subject:  Dreams Through the Glass by Linda Fargo of Bergdorf Goodman, and Confessions of a Window Dresser by Simon Doonan of Barneys.  There are more…but that’s a good start.

It’s really hard to get good pictures of windows when your purpose is to show what’s inside.  I’ll just say that it’s worth the trip into the city every Christmas just to see what Bergdorf Goodman will blow us away with.  The other department stores have respectable vignettes, but BG is the master.  I only have a few shots to show you today, but you get the idea.

Their theme this year was Tony Duquette, famed interior designer who….well, read up on him HERE.  The five main windows were set as Air Water Fire Earth and Light, design directed by David Hoey.  The side windows are always just as interesting.  CHECK OUT THIS VIDEO, showing some behind-the-scenes and commentary about the 2007 windows.

The windows around one side were based on opposites.  There was Naughty or Nice, Fact or Fiction, and this: Lady or Tiger.

My most favorite thing was a mini display in one of the niche-type windows at the front of the store where they had jewelry or something showcased.  I didn’t even notice because I was too star struck with the other details.  The white valance here is cut from PAPER….and as Jenny noted, even the tassles were made from cut and rolled paper.  Like these tassles were about 1/2" long.  And check out the fringe!  Utterly cool.  With all this glamour and fuss, the take-away for me was this one little thing.

We know they work all year long getting ready for the unveiling late November, and then Poof!  The windows are filled with something else by January.  I can imagine how much fun it must be to gather all this cool stuff, have items fabricated, and then install them.  Don’t ya wonder where it all goes after?

In case you missed the link above, go see this video clip:  HERE  I’ve seen a few documentaries on the holiday windows over the years.  I think it’s Lord & Taylor that have their displays on a hydraulic lift that drops down to the basement level where they can work on them out-of-view until they are ready to be hoisted back into position.  I vote for a t.v. special every year showing us all the windows of all major department stores  around the world and the clever artists who make them happen.  In fact, the product displays within a store are just as fascinating, regardless of the season, so there could be a whole television series showing us something inventive about retail merchandising every week!  Someone call Bravo.  (Or did I miss something and they already have a show about that?)

    good morning !
Never heard of Tony Duquette, so you tickled me to search and learn more…
What a huge job to create and make the windowdisplays !
Sometimes, when I see all the stuff you can buy ( and the lot of ugly things that are created !), I miss craftmanship.
When you see the beautiful things that were made in the Victorian time or Art nouveau stuff, I hate the massproduction that we have now.
Of course , all those beautiful things were only available for the happy few, but nevertheless..
When I see these pictures, I see the same craftmanship as in old days and no, we can’t afford it, but we still can enjoy it !
And everyone who creates something by him or herself, has some craftmanship that is valuable !
    greetings from Belgium

It’s kind of funny, I was just telling my sister one of my fondest memories growing up was when my mom would take the six (yes, six) of us downtown to see Santa and look at the display windows in all the department stores….Daytons was always my favorite.
    Great pictures! Thanks for sharing.
    Until later,

    Hi Michelle,
This is Carrie’s mom, Maryanne. I read your blog via Carrie! I had to comment on Bergdorf’s windows. They are fabulous! I love the theme. I love the big department store windows at Christmas. They are so magical. There was a special about the process of designing for the big stores on TV last year. My daughter-in-law found it and we watched it but I don’t remember what channel it was on. I agree that it should be a yearly happening.
I grew up in Southern New Jersey and Philadelphia was our shopping mecca. My mother and I would go into the city and she would take me to Gimbles to see Santa Claus. I still remember how magical the toy department was. They always decorated it like Santa’s work shop. We would see all the decorations at Gimbles, Strawbridge and Clothier and Wanamaker’s, where they had a fountain and light show at certain times throughout the day in the center of the store.
Thanks for your beautiful blog. The art work is wonderful. And thanks for the opportunity to remember those long ago Christmases. I hope yours is wonderful.

Thank you for this amazing look at the work of brilliant and often under-congratulated window designers. I wonder if they’d allow me to live in the Shell Window…oh come ON, just ONE little night?

I have never experienced seeing windows like those at Bergdorf’s! I’ve always wanted to spend a Christmas holiday in NY….maybe one day!!! Thanks for taking me there ‘virtually’ Michelle! Never seen anything even close here in southern California!

Oh, those windows are SO Tony Duquette!!!! EXTRAORDINARY!!!!!!!!!! Wish I could see them all in person. I did some display work for awhile, but nothing on such a grand scale! I also did some interior design, so I guess we have a few things in common.

What stunning windows, wow! I would just stand and look at them for hours – imagine the hundreds, maybe thousands of people who will walk past without “looking” – what a joy they will miss.
Thank you for taking the photos and sharing with us

    Michelle,
These are absolutely stunning. Okay without fail next year I am coming to see them myself. I am making a point of going to Harrods in Knightsbridge which also has famous stunning window designs at Christmas time. That is the nearest we have in London to such fabulousness. Also Dickens and Jones on Regent street usually have some eyecatching designs. The detail, the theme, the totalilty of it all is just amazing. Thanks for sharing the pictures which at least brings us a little taste. I am defintely coming to see this next year…… I am starstruck.

    Hey Michelle,
GORGEOUS! Now I, too, feel I must make a trip to NYC at Christmas time to see the windows! The closest we have here is Chicago, which aint no slouch, neither!!! (Sorry, don’t know what got into me!) Your photos and descriptions are really vivid and colorful and wonderful, thank you so much for sharing something so incredibly beautiful and inspiring! Happy Holidays!
PS: I’ve really LOVED the current Street Team Challenge, thanks for such a great idea!

Thank you for sharing these with us. I keep learning new things and seeing new sights here. I have never taken a trip to look at windows. I just happen upon them and think, that’s so cool! But these are beyond fantastic. The things that can be done with white paper! And it’s so hard to keep white paper white. I’m sure they treat it or something, but wouldn’t painting it white just make it look funny? I love the opposites theme. I need to go and look at the videos now, and read about tony. You have inspired me again! I’m going to make an altered windowbox for my partner for Christmas.

I assume you saw the show HGTV did on holiday windows? I’ve watched two years in a row now – I was ready to watch last years over again when I saw it in the tv guide but was thrilled that they had updated it! They featured Saks, Macy’s, Barney’s, Neiman Marcus, and a few others that were very cool! If you don’t mind if I add a link, look here for the episodes replay dates: http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/spcl_prsntn/episode/0,1806,HGTV_3909_53931,00.html
Some day I will go to “The City” and see them in person… along with “the tree”, “the ice rink”, and all the rest… Have a wonderful holiday season!
