H.B.O.

What do you do when you’re both sick and playing nurse?  Watch tv, more specifically movies.  I see that tonight is the launch of The Gates documentary I told you about at an earlier time.  I won’t see it until wake up tomorrow as I set the tivo for the 1am showing – we’ll be watching L.A. Ink at 10.

I’m sure it will be fabulous – just as experiencing them was.  I can’t believe it’s been three years but this photo is proof – the kids look so young!

EDIT:  There was a scheduling mishap on TLC so I quickly switched over to HBO and caught it.  FABULOUS!!!  Very cool that they took you through the early days of proposing The Gates.  And showed all the pessimists, so you could really appreciate what a huge feat it was to get this art installed.  (I so wanted to be on the volunteer team, had the application….couldn’t swing the schedule.)  See it!

BRAVO TO OPTIMISM!!!

I caught this one over the weekend:  Bernard and Doris.  I was interested to learn more about Doris Duke.  We’ve visited her wonderful estate here in NJ but I admit I didn’t know much about her.  You can catch through mid-march.

And if you haven’t been, visit Duke Farms.  They have guided tours all year long but definitely go when it’s warmer so you can appreciate not only the gardens, but all the grounds, including man-made lakes and remote-controlled waterfalls.  (My own photo below!)

And a head up for this, coming in March:  Autism – The Musical.  I don’t know anything about it but will tune in for sure!

Hope you are all staying well!  Wash your hands and take your Vitamin C.

The DVR is all set. Thank you SO much for this Heads Up. I would have been totally bummed had I not caught these.
AUTISM- THE MUSICAL? I’ll send a memo to the entire staff at IMAGINE. Thanks for that, especially. I think that we can safely lock you into the “Pulse Girl” Club (where you have been from the start).
I hope that you and the family are Healing….

I have to admit, when Christo and Jeanne Claude were just starting to become well-known, they bugged the hell out of me. They seemed to be a pretentious French couple (I know, some would say that’s redundant) who insisted their art was as important as oxygen. I would never have expected either of them to say, “but in the end, it’s just a piece of art.” Still don’t get them completely, but I really liked The Gates.
Have you seen the Joe Louis documentary? I never watch HBO Sports, but this I had to see. I think it’ll be available until the end of the month. I’ll have to squeeze “Bernard & Doris” in too — I love Susan Sarandon to pieces.

I missed this Michelle but will have to catch it when it is replayed. I remember how exhilarating and exciting the actual Gates were. They totally transformed Central Park into a living museum!

Hey, thanks for the heads up on the HBO doc. and Bernard and Doris! I would’ve missed them both! And your kids really HAVE grown… amazing what three years’ time brings, isn’t it?!? (Especially when you feed them! I’m KIDDING! I used to say that to folks who commented on how big our kids were getting… no one thought it was all that funny then… sigh… I need to let go of that one, don’t I?!?) Hope you are feeling better… you need a nurse? Call me! xoxo

Thanks for this information! We have HBO on demand and The Gates will be available through March. Knowing me, I’ll watch it several times before Flixing it later. The Autism program, I will definitely set for the DVR. I am very ignorant about it.
    Take care of yourself!

Michelle you made my day on Autism the Musical! The little boy in the right corner-Adam-goes to my son’s school and has been in his classes off and on since Kindergarten. I’ll never forget the Christmas Music Show when he got up with his HUGE cello and introduced himself: “I’m Adam. I’m autistic. I’m also a Cellist.”
    God, I love that kid!

I hadn’t heard of any of these shows on t.v. and they sound so interesting. I felt exhilarated going through The Gates in Central Park years ago. I didn’t understand the concept behind it – and now I know that it doesn’t actually have any meaning beyond being art – but it was such a welcome sight in Central Park when all the trees were bare and the city seemed to be shades of gray.
Bernard and Doris sounds like it would be a hoot. Was it fun?
And Autism:The Musical sounds like it would be heartwarming. You’ll have to tell me about that, too.

Thanks for the tip on Bernard and Doris. We watched it last night, and enjoyed it very much. First, the fine cast, and secondly, the story. I didn’t know much about Doris Duke before this. I looked her up this morning on Wikipedia and tried to figure out what was true and what wasn’t about the movie. There’s also a few interesting interviews with the director and the cast on the HBO website. As strange as the story was, in the end, I decided they were soulmates who somehow found each other and loved each other in their own way.

Thanks for the reminder that HBO is airing The Gates. It was so interesting to see the process unfold, but also the critique of aesthetics in our culture. I had the opportunity to see Cristo’s Umbrellas out here in Cali 18 or so years back. I had to pass them driving to and from work everyday. It was amazing how sad the landscape became after they were removed. Such a simple design, but they added so much energy and light to a very ugly part of the freeway.

I went straight to the TIVO and “dotted” both of these. I remember hearing about them and of course, instantly forgot, so I’m thrilled to be reminded. Can’t wait to see The Gates. Thanks, Michelle! – Love the picture of you and your family right there! How great for your kids to be actually be a part of it! It’s so cool to see a concept of that scale brought to life.
