epic art

I’m waiting to hear from my friend Anne who was possbily going to the National Gallery for a viewing of the new HBO documentary on The Gates.  Christo was going to be there for questions.  Cool.  Look for the film to come out in February.  Loved The Gates – was able to witness them twice during their fleeting 16 day installation in Central Park.  It was like walking through one’ man’s dream.  His next installation will be over the Arkansas River in Colorado in 2012.  I’ve invited myself for a visit with Lisa to see it.

Next up for NYC:  Waterfalls on the Waterfront.  Mayor Bloomberg is expected to announce the porject today.  No pictures yet – renderings should be released this afternoon.  Here are photos of his previous waterfall projects, the amount of scaffolding is a little alarming:

Waterfall

From the New York Times:

Four man-made waterfalls, 90 to 120 feet high, will punctuate New York’s waterfront for three months starting in mid-July. The creation of the Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson, the project is a collaboration between the city and the Public Art Fund, the nonprofit organization that presents art around the city. The waterfalls have been designed to be environmentally friendly and will be in New York Harbor at Pier 35 in Lower Manhattan, at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge and between Piers 4 and 5 in Brooklyn and at Governors Island.  (It will be on display from mid-July to mid-October, and will be illuminated after sunset.)

EDIT:  these just in…..

Michelle, I was fortunate to spend a couple of days with the gates too! Was just magical walking in and out of this.
If you can believe it, Christo came to Longmont some years ago in conjunction with a show at the museum. How interesting were those 2!!
I’m inviting myself to join you and Lisa when you visit the Arkansas River project 🙂

Olafur Eliasson is one of my favorites! I was lucky to see his exhibition in 2001: Surroundings surrounded in Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie, here in Karlsruhe, Germany. Actually, he is born in Denmark and now lives in Germany. I hope to be able to see more from him one day, his exhibition made an unforgettable impression! And don’t worry about scaffolding, when you stand in front of his roaring waterfall, you don’t notice it!

The Gates were such a unique experience and it looks like the Waterfalls will be the same. Thanks for letting us know.
