element of surprise

What gets your attention when you are looking at art?  Or magazines, or books, or blogs?  Isn’t there a hope that you’ll be surprised?  A desire to be impressed by something that is new-to-you, or something that is clever, or inventive, or just different.  You want to be surprised.  We all get bored from seeing more of the same don’t we?

I read an interview yesterday (or was it the day before?) with my favorite rock star and he was talking about going back into the studio and what keeps him inspired.  As a musician, who is also a fan of many kinds of music, it was a simple thing to say….."I want to be surprised by a melody I haven’t come across yet."

Isn’t that what we strive for too?  Not a melody, but a something.  We want to be surprised by something we haven’t come across yet.  Notice he didn’t say he wanted to go into a music store to hear something he hadn’t heard before….he’s going into the studio to discover that melody – that combination of notes that might be the next hook or lick.  Eight notes and time spent at the keyboard or on the guitar.  Experimenting, exploring, unearthing, failing, succeeding.

In the studio.  THAT is where you will make your discoveries, the best-learned lessons.  Putting in the time with messy hands and dirty brushes is where you will find the most rewarding surprises.

Now that my taxes are done (whew!) I can being the final preparations for my upcoming workshop.  This is the funnest time (yes, I said funnest). I rehearse in my head all the things I want to remember to share with the artists.  I scribble notes, make playlists, overpack supplies, and try to contain my giddy-ness that I am about to spend studio time with other seekers-of-surprises.  Each artist will learn something different, and hopefully surprising, depending on their accumulated experience…..and no matter what is on my lesson plan, we will all learn something from one another.

Here’s hoping you plan some surprise time for yourself this week.

I must read that interview. That sentiment is so right. I think a part of the surprise is that this thing that you’re doing ACTUALLY WORKS. At least for me that’s part of it. Discovery might be the best feeling in the world.

Yes you want to be surprised. I want to be surprised. But what about the fact that what surprises me might horrify you … and what surprises you might bore her … and so on and so forth? People react to discoveries so differently … based on the whowhatwhenwhereandhow of everything. I’m not sure what the answer to all of it is but I think for sure that those who put in the sweat equity to get into studio and try and break new ground are contributing to the answer and deserve major props. (P.S., I wanted to end with a sentence written in Wingdings but Typepad won’t let me do it.)

    Hi Michelle
SHARP observation!! Yep that is what i seek for in art (and that’s why i always want to try something new, despite wallet pain *LOL* i ordered a hot tip tool, see what that will do). That is why i can be very happy on half of a square inche of a journal page: because it is SURPRISING! Thanks for revealing this insight!

You hit the nail on the head. I want to be surprised – and yes – excited. Interested is good. So is intrigued.
I have to say that your blog holds the highest SQ (surprise-quotient) for me and I must admit to sneaking back in occasionally for a top-up of inspiration. Keep on doing what you’re doing. x

How wonderful for you. I know you and your workshoppers (!) will all experience those moments of surprise; all effective teachers learn as much as their students. It’s part of what makes teaching exciting.
I’m trying to imagine the packing that must go on for this. What do you put it all in and how many trunks do you transport. Perhaps you will document this and share the picture here.
    hint hint. What fun!

A lot of the time surprise comes from within. I surprise myself by how I react to things, either intellectually or emotionally or sensually. It’s easy to assume that surprise comes from outside me, but really, it’s me! Why do I connect with a certain thing or person? Why does it hit me more today than it would have last week? If it’s something I’ve seen before, but just brushed by, why did I forget I saw it? Because it’s ME that completes the picture! That’s what’s so great about life. Self-discovery, self-motivation, creation from self, inspiration that enters from the greater force of life. A life examined is the best way to live many lives, not only one!
How cool for you, to be in the midst of a collective experience!! Have a great time.

That Ville, he provides inspiration to you and I daily! Since I am finally finished with my taxes as well, I am going to devote time to reaking havoc in my basement with paint and paper. That is until the yard starts screaming for my touch. Why can’t I just play full time?

Suprise? yes. Inspiration? DEFINATELY….and I am one of those who feeds off of colors, music, textures of things. I am touchy-feely, visual and noisy. Too much quiet makes me antsy. Too much same old same old makes me cranky!! LOL

I thought you’d appreciate that my order of carving blocks arrived this week, but instead of opening my package to pull out 4 blocks… I opened to see 19 little packages of blocks waiting… SURPRISE! …-bewildered-… the powers that be are pushing me to carve MY stamps… wonder what new creations await me? ~GGTW

I hope you have a great time planning/preparing for your workshop, I am sure it will be a blast…wish I was going, maybe one day!
    Happy Creating, Ux

This post really made me think. Being surprised by the unexpected is truly a special thing…and one that in my experience isn’t all that common in art. But when it happens…talk about a shot of adrenaline!

So true…I’m always trying something new, or changing the instructions slightly (or drastically!) trying to get that WOO HOO moment of a new discovery, that elusive new melody in my art…

I want to see something inspiring. It might be art or a place I’ve never been or a show I want to see. I love the Internet for the wide world it takes us to.
