you asked for it

I am hardly an expert in Photoshop.  I call my version PS DS (as in DinoSaur era).  I do have a later edition, given by sweet friend Kathy, but I can't bring myself to install is as it will render my own custom brushes invalid.  In addition to making your own brushes you can purchase brush sets – there are some really cool ones out there.  With this tutorial I am advocating for making your own – because there is nothing like having tools made from your own stuff.

Don't forget to save your custom brushes.  At the drop-down menu you'll see "Save Brushes", click on that and name the set, and note the location.  You will only get the hang of it once you give it a try.  I can't answer any questions about later versions of Photoshop because I've never seen how those programs are set up but I can imagine it's not too different.  Again, there are alot of online tutorials.

That's is for now….hope it's been helpful.

    Michelle-
LOVE this tutorial. I have not done any art on the computer but this I have to try! Another thing for my to do list.

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU, Michelle!
Not only do I now know how to make brushes, but how to save them, use them and how to make border brushes. Dingbats! Of course! Brilliant.
And how cool is it that the brush Crusade makes great brushes?
    A million thanks!

I’m so confused….. together with Gails tutorial though, I will get there. You see I am “Photoshop Impaired” so things like desaturation, contrasted, are useful to those who understand the lingo. However, you showed me a lot of new things here. The dingbats and using other tools to enhance and create, that’s taking it a step further. Thanks.

I LOVE the ‘erased’ edge, and the period dots! You are too cool, thank you so much for sharing!! I don’t work much with the computer, but this would be WAY COOL to print off, tear and add into my collages!!! I use photos, maps, letters, etc. copied onto cool papers, but this might kick some of the collage ‘out of the park’ as they say. Thanks so much! Deb

You are one of my best teachers !!!!
You feel what your students need and then you share…:)
Although photoshop is something I work now often with for school, for my blog, I still couldn’t figure out how you did some “intricate stamps” with brushes.
I never thought about scanning stamped/ glued collages and use them as brush. I made a lot of custom brushes yet myself ( what you teached me in the past) , but that where single images.
these collages add a lot more interest !
The fact that they are made with own original work is thé best part !
I’m tired after a busy day at school, but you tickle me to experiment right NOW…
Thanks, thanks , thanks for the tutorial !!!
    XOXO

PS : spring IS really close here in Belgium !
It was such a lovely day yesterday I couldn’t resist to make a blogpost about it. Feel welcome to take a look at” pinkepinke” and see some photos of the “signs of spring”

    Michele,
I would be giving you a HUGE hug and just a little pinch if we were in the same room. I recently decided I NEED to learn to make custome brushes and made my first, very simple one. A plain signature. But I want to learn to make more sophisticated ones like you do. So that’s the hug. Here’s the pinch. I’ve got SO much to do right now and you have added yeast to my curiosity dough. I’ll have to REWARD myself with trying these techniques after I get a few things moved over to the Ta-Dah List.
[It would be just a teeny-tiny pinch. ;)]

Though I’m miles from being ready to even think about Photoshop, your tutorial gives a clear and helpful reference for when the day arrives. Thank you for all that you share so generously, for letting us have a peek behind the curtain at how the magic is performed.

As ive said in the past, ive had such a hard go with photoshop…i think its the fact that im so rushed and im doing a million things at once…..Im temping right now, once this is over, im switching gears back to the house…going to spring clean and paint, and THEN the one thing i want to work on is photoshop, to use in my jewelry making…thanks for the motivation…im gonna try it again!

Top o the mornin’ Michelle! Have done just a little with brushes, but you’ve added some really cool tips. (shaping the eraser – scanning stamps and random grungy things – monoprints – WOW!)
And your examples are ri-diculously beautiful… lol

Thank you for this tutorial! I’ve never thought that make brushes could be so easy. I’ll try to make some! I’ve just added your blog to my Google Reader.

Terrific tutorials, Michelle! It’s always fun and really useful to see how someone else accomplishes things in PS… there’s 50 different ways to get to the same place, but it’s always possible to learn a shortcut or new way of doing things… thank you for sharing, I know this took some serious time to set up for us. I’m going to have to try to put some of your techniques myself and see what happens in CS3 (I’m still trying to get used to all the changes!). REALLY great tutorial! xoxo
