tradition

We send a photo card every year.  Love this one – great "time capsule" for 2007 as all the kids are wearing rock and roll band hoodies.  This year marks the first time we all attended a concert together.  They are sitting on the new deck…..five years ago it was only a concrete landing…….

Times flies, doesn’t it?  Here’s a cute thing:  this morning Peter asked me if I was going to make a cake.  It’s been our tradition to have birthday cake on Christmas.  We take baby Jesus from his manger and put him on the cake.  The one thing kids understand is birthdays and presents, right?  I thought it would be a good way to remind them of the real meaning behind the celebration.  I love it that our 17 year old wanted to be sure we were doing it again.

I said this last year and it’s worth repeating:  I wish you a Merry Christmas.  And with that I don’t mean to be insensitive to the other holidays that are celebrated at this time of year.  I hope that you GET that I’m really wishing you a Happy whatever-it-is-you-celebrate.  The intended message is not necessarily about Christmas, it’s wishing you and your family the joys of the season, whatever it is that you honor.

EDIT:  I meant to give a review of Sweeney Todd.  Saw it last night.  It did not disappoint – VERY fabulous.  Yes, there was blood….but in an almost comic book way.  Cinematography was brilliant, as was Depp.  HBC was funny, in a dry, you-must-be-British kind of way.  Swooning.

I Love the Birthday cake idea. Perfect for your Christmas Season.
I just ate more sugar last night and tonight (cookie making binge) than I have since July, so I’ll just stand and admire your cake as my blood sugar spins off into the vapors.
The kids are adorable and so obviously “Wards”.
You got to see SWEENEY!!!…without ME??!!!!
    I am, as usual….a J.W. (Jealous Wreck).
    Happy Holidays, Sweetie!

Merry Christmas to you and your family. It’s wonderful to see a family celebrating Christmas in this way when so many people are cynical and have lost the meaning of the season.

Aw, look at your kiddies! They look so happy in the photo…well, at the least they do the top photo. Peter looks like he’s about to lose it on Fallon in the second photo – hah! What a perfect photo of childhood, huh?! It cracks me up! It’s nice to see (and hear during our car trips to class) that you have such a terrific relationship with them. You’re a cool mum, Michelle! And Fallon looks so much like you! Wow! The miracles of genetics! 🙂

PS – I saw Sweeney Todd with my husband on Sunday afternoon and it was so COOL! I *heart* Alan Rickman. And didn’t you think the young girl looked like the perfect character for a Tim Burton film? She looked like a 19th C porcelain doll. I read an interview with Helena Bonham Carter and she joked that she was pregnant throughout the filming of Sweeney Todd and that as the film wasn’t shot in time sequence, her “boobs” (her words) looked like they were inflating and deflating throughout the film! Hee!

Stopped by your blog (which I *heart*)and just had to let you know that we saw Sweeney Todd tonight. . . . our entire family + friends. You’re right, it rocked! I loved Tim Burton’s influence. Depp and Carter had just that hint of Jack and Sally (Nightmare before Christmas). I do wish they had let Danny Elfman have his way with the musical score, but I really can’t complain about any of it. It was wonderful. And I do agree with you that the blood–color especially–was more “comic bookish” than horrific, but that particular shade of red is a Christmas color isn’t it? *giggles*
It’s almost over now, so hope your Christmas was happy. Keep celebrating!

Love these photo cards. I get some every year, and one is from the family across the street, whose kids are now in their early teens. It’s amazing to look at them all side by side.
I am just catching up with your blog, as I’m getting over stomach flu, and I haven’t had my usual energy. I hope your holiday was beautiful. Merry Christmas all year long!
