self-imposed sanity

Heading into holiday season do you find you set aside your artwork?  While I enjoy the preparations and festivities my studio becomes cluttered with gifts and wrappings.  This year I have a self-imposed assignment of keeping up with my visual journal, at least on a weekly basis to stay plugged into creativity.  I'm going to use my stash of favorite red things that sit in my journal kit.  Using them feels good.  Making stuff feels good.  Dirty hands feels good.  Why not try to set aside one morning a week for yourself?  I started last week:

My rose bushes don't know what to think.  The weather keeps changing.  I clip off roses as they enthusiastically dare to appear, not knowing if it will be in the 70s or the 30s.  I think this may be the last bud.  I'll leave her on and watch her grow.

Like the idea of keeping the art work going – it definitely does keep the sanity during this busy time of year. I have been working on a craft fair for over a month now and have to squeeze journal time in here and there and boy, do I miss it when it takes a back seat. Like your little kit idea…the fair is this Saturday – when it is over I will make me a kit like that too, smart lady !
    Enjoy every last rose…
    Hugs !

    Hello Michelle,
I’m reading the new “artjournaling”magazine from Stampington for the moment and I drool over all the creative journals. Same with your pages …
I create, but I don’t seem to be able to really start artjournalling myself. I don’t know what keeps me away from doing it : I think the availabe time to create is so limited that I always have something to create for a swap, a birthday,… things with a time limit and there is no time to “just create” in journalpages.
Maybe I just overthink it too much and have it hard to just let me go and go with the flow…
    I don’t know..
maybe this is an oppointment with myself for 2010 : starting a artjournal…
    greetings from Belgium

That last little bud peeking out is so touching. The roses are confused, aren’t they? I’ve been shocked to see fresh roses during my photo rambles. I guess all we can do is wait for the ground to freeze, then tuck them into bed with their winter mulch. Just remember to cut only the blooms. We don’t want the lovelies putting up fresh green growth at this time of year.
On an entirely different subject, I am neck-deep in work and freelance work and teenager and aging parents and mess that must be corralled before the holidays are upon us. My art sits abandoned, wagging it’s little tale and begging me to come play and all I can do is pat it’s papery head and go back to my chores. Thanks for the reminder that it’s more than just a self-indulgence. Maybe with that in mind, taking it out for an hour once in awhile doesn’t seem so frivolous. But oh, how I miss everyone!

Staying plugged into our soul nurturing creative activities is essential, especially during this time of year when we do so much to make the holidays special for everyone else. What I love about my journals is that they are designed to please me. I design for other audiences all day long and to indulge in my projects is such a treat. I love the color theme for your journal and your pages are so funky. November is Art Every Day Month and I’ve been squeezing in some creative project in each day. Some days like today, I get up early and have a play in Photoshop. I’m having fun altering photos to get that vintage look. Todays rose hips came out very cool.
