part-time crusader

Opening weekend we went to see the new Indiana Jones film (loved it!)   Since then I've been on an Indy kick – by that I mean that I've revived my interest in some sketchbooks that were shelved.  A few years ago I decided I wanted to keep a very small sketchbook similar to Dr. Jones as seen in The Last Crusade.  I loved seeing his in the film – all those notes and maps and images of artifacts made me wild.  Not long after starting my own 'grail diary' I read The Da Vinci Code and began another small journal to store my investigation of symbols and iconography.  Funny how the two sketchbooks cross paths from time to time.(The first page has a copy of the email sent to me by Lisa Hoffman (2003), recommending I read the DVC.)

For this month's GPP Street Team Crusade we are taking on the challenge of making wax rubbings and then painting over it for a resist.  Here's one of my rubbings without paint.  I wanted to make one like in the Indy Diary…..

And more rubbings – this time over textured wallpaper, then brushed with paint.  Try it and then come play along on the Street Team blog.  You have to be very heavy handed with the side of the crayon for good wax coverage so it will resist the paint you brush over it.  Use watered down paint or after coating the page with acrylic, spritz with water and wipe away.  (This anaglypta wallpaper was a gift from my friend Judy N.)

Years ago I found this terrific site that has incredible visuals from the Indy Diary.  The guy even walks you through every detail so you can make your own.  I like to visit there just to see all the pages, HERE.  When I was looking for this site again I came across this new book!  Not quite like the movie prop but I had to have it!

When I was at the bookstore I came across this Da Vinci Kit – on clearance for $2.99!!  Graham had given me one last year but it was a score to get another so I could have one to cut up and use in my journal – especially the paper model of the duomo.

If you are into Indiana Jones and archeology, you should try to catch the History Channel's showing of Indiana Jones and the Ultimate Quest.  It was cool to see how the films have inspired people to become archeologists.  It also made such an impression on me of how 'things' left behind tell the story of mankind.

Congrats to Maj Carita Hoenborg in Germany for being Crusade No. 20 Top Hat Pick.  The crusaders were busy making paper casts and they were all very cool.  Come visit the links and see for yourself.  As I mentioned, this month is wax rubbing and resist painting.  Wanna play?  Hop on over!

    Hi Michelle:
I am sorry to have to ask this but how does one “announce” the completion of a Crusade? I know about a blog post on my blog – at least I think that’s the method – but how about linking? How does that happen? Apologies for my ignorance !

Oh, how wonderful – icons, symbols and mystery in a small notebook in the Jungle. I want to pack my bags now and go explore the wild! Your rubbings looks great and I’m heading forward on this crusade with my sweatband on!

Oh Michelle! Those little journals of yours look intriguing! Now I loved the Da Vinci code and Indiana Jones (I put the Henry journal on my Amazon wish list!)
but I think yours are the original one off journals, that would be really exciting to look through! xo

Love your journals. I started collecting materials for a Da Vinci journal/altered book but haven’t had a chance to really work on it. I am still trying to decide how I want to proceed.
I had also been obsessed by the journal the Vincent Price had at the very beginning in the movie Edward Scissorhands. I loved the movie and I LOVE Johnny Depp. And I just loved all the sketches and notations in his journal! I had started on that one some time ago but haven’t worked on it in a long time. I will have to dig around and see where I tucked it.
And now you have me thinking about an Indiana Jones journal. You are so bad!
    Until later,
    Judy N

Michelle, I was looking for this kit, and I found one that has a model in it and a restoration kit for the Last Supper and a book about his life. Is this the same thing? It just looks completely different! (Your photo is more intriguing!)
