I recognize that I have a limited range of colors that I like to use in my art.  I'm comfortable with that and know it has always been part of my process.  I don't regard this as a limitation, but an opportunity to focus on composition and content.  Looking back on past work I can see that the neutral family of colors has become a favorite, and my current comfort palette is warm tones.  There are only six paints on my studio table, next to a galvanized tin of dried pods.  It makes me happy to have these within view….and it was fun to use the eyedropper tool to pull together the palettes below.  It's amazing what we can see when we really look.

    Love this palette1 Use it in decorating a lot. It is urban and industrial, yet warm.

    I stick to the same general palette, too! Mine is generally neutrals or earth tones, with a shock of contrast, usually a red shade. My palette tends to be dictated by what inspiration I’m drawing on, and my main inspirations are nature and medievalia, which often combine into nature taking back the ruins of what was built in the Middle Ages like we saw in Germany. I love that warm gold you use in yours, yellows are not something I tend to be comfortable using. Your palette is very rich and warm, I like that.

    I seem to almost always be drawn to a palette consisting of aqua, teal, lime green, bright orange, and pops of red. I try to stray into other territory sometimes, but keep coming back to that one, and have for a few years now.

    Love your art and color selections; my style is kinda “Dr Seuss”. Especially love your knights of the round table work. Medieval imagery and compass roses trigger a buying reflex with me for some reason.

    Linda, thank you for stopping by and chiming in. Thanks for your compliment. I’m with you – can’t pass up medieval or compass stuff. Love your style description – Dr. Suess! We often refer to a tree in our front yard as Suess-like.

    Your work is so beautiful and this palette is perfect for you at your ascetic. I admire your minimalist approach to color Michelle. Mine is in the range from red to pink and all the warm colors, with a mix of green added in. 🙂 this could be a crusade. I miss those! 🙂

    I too, love your pallette choices. Makes me think of coffee and cream with a side of india inks thick and thin. Recently I’ve been choosing warm yellows, cobalts and turquoises, with pinky oranges… I did want to ask how you kept the paint from creeping under your stencils? Are you using a spray adhesive that will keep the paint out? Maybe some kind of masque fluid somehow? I am in awe of those edges and haven’t been able to achieve them yet myself.

    Crescent, thanks for chiming in. I do not use adhesive. I sponge in acrylic paint and then wipe out – that process pushes paint to the hard edge leaving a nice line while lifting out alot of it. The key is to work really dry, and work over a layer of gesso that allows the movement of paint.
