learning new tricks

MWfelting

I'm teaching myself some new tricks.  I love exploring a new craft.  I really believe that trying new things gives you ideas that you can bring to your old things.  The latest:  needle felting.  I can't knit….but in 3 seconds I taught myself how to felt.  You can't stop me now.

It's interesting that you can be surrounded by treasured items that have beauty and sentiment but later take on another role as inspiration just because of a shift in perspective, or an awareness.  Once I started thinking about wool I ordered these handsome acorns from Fairyfolk.  And I opened the Love Book to Kristen's lovely page, and I pulled out my felted bag from Marie.  Then I tooled around on youtube and found THIS.  Who wouldn't want to try something like this?  Sure, it took some supplies….I found those online HERE.

More from youtube:  a video from Rice where she shows you additional things to do with needle felting.  HERE.  It's endless.  I great craft to practice during football games….you can produce many items in one sitting.  When it's too cold to be in my studio I can sit at the table and felt.

Do you felt?  Tell us about it!!

no michelle, i can’t felt, but i will knit my first felt-wool-socks next weekend… i am going to have a wonderful creative weekend together with 10 other (stamping) friends – we will go to an hotel and knit and crochet together… looking forward!

I was given some needle felting supplies by a friend and worked with them a bit. One caution I have is to avoid working with fibers in the same area you paint in unless you don’t mind random fibers ending up on your painted surfaces. You don’t have to ask how I know…. 😉

love that red and black swirly heart Michelle – beats my first attempts at needle felting hands down! I really must get my roving out and have another go.

I’m so glad you’re enjoying needle felting, Michelle! The hearts really look great! It really becomes addicting after a while, and there are so many things you can do with, and to, your felted pieces. Try a few beads on those hearts, the shiny and flat textures look great together. Of course, I bead anything that stands still long enough. Ask Carrie :)! Have fun!

Awesome sauce! You’re doing way better than I ever have at needle felting LoL. And yes, Mom does bead anything that stands still long enough. I constantly have to watch my back at home… 😉 Glad you’re enjoying your newest hobby!

These are so pretty and thank you for the links. I am not much drawn to textile work, but felting certainly is painting with fiber and it’s clearly yours!

Haven’t felted yet, but I’m MAD for the little forest creatures and mushrooms…you know, the red cap mushrooms with the white spots? They’re cute in that very “good cute” way.
Can’t wait to see what ELSE you do with your new passion!
    ka-CHUNK ka-CHUNK ka-CHUNK……

I love needle felting too. Have made bowls for my rocks(using a nerf ball as a base to work on) and hearts filled with lavender as well. Lots of little mice-ys for my kitty cats too. Only problem is that I have a bum shoulder that doesn’t like the repetitive motion so much so I have taken a break for now. Those cases with the embroidery – so yummy !
Enjoy adding your art to the new craft !
Hugs to you, lovely Michelle !

I’ve made a few experiments with it, a tiny teddy bear and a flower that I wear in my cap every day… It’s fun, but be careful with your fingers…

    I love needle felting
you can even use whole yarn instead of roving – just cut a length and untwist it – much more readily available and much cheaper

OOPS!!! that was supposed to say WOOL yarn

Those hearts are adorable – I may yet take up felting (in between all of the other mixed media arts!)

I love felt and I love felting. I have mostly done wet felting, but have tried needle felting a few times. I’m in recovery from a felting teacher who disapproved of needle felting. Yours look great, very precise. And thank you so much for all the juicy inspiration!

I’ve tried needle felting before – but I feel that it is about to be revived! I’m holding you responsible – lol!

    Hello Michelle,
Your hear with the swirl is my kind of stuff ! 🙂
I discovered needle felting a few years ago and my daughter felted her own dreadlocks by using warm water with soap and then needlefelting them until they are very sturdy.
Now we have dreadlocks in azurblue, shocking pink, flashy green, black and red 🙂
They are easily added to your hair with an elastic.
I needlefelted flowers : a violet was made into a brooch for my mom…
You can indeed watch TV while needlefelting, but if you stick in your fingers , it hurts !!! LOL
    Have fun !

I received this most amazing felted scarf. My friend’s niece made it and is a felt artist extraordinaire. I’ll try to take a good photo of it. She worked in this black nylon material into it. I can’t describe it. I’ll just have to photograph it. I met a young felt artist at our local art institute. I was amazed at her little sculptures. Have fun with your new medium. The hearts are adorable.

    Hi Michelle,
This is totally unrelated but I was wondering if I could ask your opinion on your digital work.
I’ve only done two crusades with you so you probably won’t remember me……but I was just wondering what photo software program you use or would recommend. I have some oil paintings that I would like to scan and make look more collage like with distressed textures, flourishes, brushes and caliigraphic scipt etc .
I did this about 5 years ago using an old Adobe 5 Photoshop but I really don’t know the new ones and if photoshop elements would do that as well.I didn’t really want to put out the money for Creative Suite.
I would gratefully appreciate your opinion but totally understand if you’re swamped and don’t have a chance.
    Thanks Michelle !
    God Bless,
    Bre

I discovered this craft last year and I’m loving it. Wish I had more time in the day. lol. It is really fun. This is the only little creature I’ve saved for myself if you’d like to take a look. The rest I’ve sent to crafty friends.
