i’m in trouble

Mw_in_trouble

Yes, two posts in one day.  Do you think it depends on what part of the country you’re from if you call it a Purse or a Handbag?  Like Soda or Pop?  Wikipedia makes it sound like they are equally used, along with Pocketbook.  So my post below ruffled the feathers of my dear friend Edie who is a HotShot at this place.  And apparently I’m not only using the wrong term, but she thinks I may possibly influence you NOT to get the latest "it" purse (or handbag).  And since I’m hardly "in the know" of what’s cool in the purse category (proof below), I will make a plug for her company, to get you all stoked up about their newest and their classics just to show I wasn’t dissing purses, or the buying of purses.  (And if you read the Wikipedia entry on purses you’ll learn women buy an average of one purse every three months, so I think Edie’s company is safe, but I’ll still plug away in the spirit of friendship.)

Mwcoach

I finally found two great purses this year – one for concerts, and one for my regular day job as a mom – backpack style.  And yep, that Coach bag was a gift, from you-know-who.  I use it sparingly as I don’t often have something of this caliber in my closet.

Mwpurses

My totes are many….can’t find them all at the moment for their photoshoot but here’s what I found on the surface in my studio.  I have 10 times more totes than purses.

Mwtotes

Hmmmm.  I guess we buy what we like, label or not…..logo or not.  (The tote I point out is cleverly made from a HIM tshirt by Vamptropolis @ Etsy.)  My favorite band will probably never make the Washington Post "in" list…..fine with me, I’ll continue to get good concert tickets.  NOBODY can tell me they aren’t all that, because to me, they are.

Are pointy shoes still in?  Bleh!  Who cares.  I’ll NEVER buy those things.  I KNOW that Edie KNOWS my post below wasn’t really about not buying the "it" purse.  And I know that you GET that it’s not about what’s Trendy or what’s Over.  We know what our "look" is when it comes to clothes or jewelry (or purses) or home decor.  We don’t let the List determine how we will make our selections because we like what we like, regardless of who approves it.  Why not figure out what your look is when it comes to your art?

Hey, do you think this post might lure Edie from her lurking position and get her comment?  *wink*

While Edie is considering not lurking, let me just crowd in here and say that the in’s and out’s are not the point, the point is, what is classic style? Classic style always works. At least for me. Not that I don’t think having just plain fun is groovy as heck, but no one questions the in-ness of fun so much as they question the in- or out-ness of something that is obviously transient and trying not to be. Taking fashion seriously is a drag. Even the classics know this. Do you think Audrey Hepburn or Marilyn Monroe took their style too seriously? No, and they were classic. Like Coach. If asked, my partner would say she LOVEs that backpack tote. LOVEs IT. I rarely carry a bag except for magazines and books, so I don’t have to face the issue. If I have a bag, I’ll walk differently or forget it at the table or drop something I don’t need out of it while I’m fishing for keys. However, if completing ‘A LOOK’ I will carry one, and it will be small and it will have a little handle. Because in that instance, it’s not for function, it’s for style.
Is this more than you wanted to know? Who asked me?

Hehee, a rather timely post, as I was considering switching back from my oh-so-stylish designer leather bag (I go back and forth between “purse” and “handbag” and generally end up with just “bag”) to my rather plain-on-the-outside-hawaiian-on-the-inside handmade cargo bag. Why? Well, because nobody seems to make a handbag with a SHOULDER STRAP anymore. Seriously, what gives? I’m tired of putting all the weight on my elbow or trying to cram short handles up and over the shoulder of my winter coat. Sometimes, it’s less about style or what you call it, it’s more about form meeting function halfway. Coach makes quality stuff and it’s a company I respect because of that, but sometimes if you want a thing done right you gotta make it yourself.

I love my handbags! Downunder a purse is what you put your money in, wallet… or do you call it a pocketbook? I agree it isn’t what is in, it is what appeals to you….

Michelle…I call mine a purse but I know people who call them pocketbooks. I think it’s a regional thing although I hear both down here in old Pennsylvania.

We carry “purses” in Kansas. Handbag conjures up an image of an elderly woman carrying it with 2 hands in front of her–or Queen Elizabeth. And I so agree with Carrie–where have all the shoulder straps gone? Carrying a purse by its handles looks dowdy or, again, like the Queen. Surely the designers know that elbows and wrists weren’t designed for dangling purses–which is where they always end up. I’ve wanted to complain to someone about this for 2 years! Thanx!

I am English and it is defintely called a handbag in my book!!LOL I got confused the first time I heard purse, expecting it to be the thing you put your coins in! Also I cannot get used to pocketbook. I have never been one to buy something because it is in or out. Who determines that anyway?? Style is eternal and does not depend on what is in or out. Wish I could say that for my art but I guess in a way that is true too…. thanks for the food for thought. I don’t even buy all those magazines anymore.

Hello to all ! This would be my first official comment ever made on blog. I told Michelle that I like to email directly – a little shy I guess.
Looks like I started a good little debate on the handbag vs the purse front. It appears the group is split. I was thinking that if I sat back and watched long enough I could use this as a focus group and share the info with our designers ! I think the word handbag is an “industry” term. If you go to any Department Store (Macy’s/Bloomingdales/Nordstrom) to buy one it is in the…handbag department. If you work for any buying office in the country -you are called the handbag buyer. How about this – in Paris the men’s department has their own handbag department full of “manbags” who knew ? That is why it is hard for me to hear the word “purse”.
But that aside I was just giving Michelle a hard time for telling her loyal readers not to buy the “it” bag. A girl needs her friends to buy the “it bag” and keep her in business !
All in good fun. And for those of you who want a sneak peak into the future…..we are in market week this week – showing the buyers the styles that will be in the stores next Fall and long straps are back !!!
Thanks Michelle for the huge plug for Coach. I have a red goodie coming your way that I think you will like !
I think I will go pour myself a “pop” 🙂

I’m so glad you girls chimed in with your replies so SHE will know we want long straps back! Purse or Handbag…it’s gotta have a long thing especially when we are trying to sling it over a winter coat! I had to go to backpack style just because I can’t take those queeny bags on my arm.

Those Coach handbags are sharp, and definitely some of my favorite. It was great to find this posting. While the new designs are sharp, I do have a nostalgic preference for the more classic design.

I googled my friend Edie and your web page came up. If I have the right person, would you tell her that Lara would love to talk to her. I don’t have her phone number since she moved. Thanks so much.
