Got Cake?

First there was the Queen.  Then there was the Movie.  Icing on the Cake?  The Zine.

Mwardmariezineblog

The collaborative zine, hosted by Anahata Katkin and Lynne Perrella, arrived recently, packed with pretty paper and lace, and filled with many lovely extras, some seen above.  It was an event to open and pour through all the enclosures, then enjoy all the pages.  This was an over-the-top presentation of a group project, meant to be devoured with a tray of petit fours.

One of my favorite things about True Colors, was writing about, and reading, everyone’s comments about making their pages – and we did this for the zine.  You can see additional glimpses on Anahata’s blog, and hopefully some of the other players will post their pages too.

You have to visit the Marie Antoinette official movie site HERE.  It’s a riot of information and extras.  I found this youtube clip of the behind-the-scenes at the Annie Leibovitz photo shoot for Vogue.  You didn’t miss that issue last September did you?

My editorial for creating my Marie Zine submission:

Mariedrewtext

I won’t show you the initial attempts where I went all Goth and even gave Marie stitches across her neck (hey, she was beheaded, why not?).  Didn’t think the zine girls would appreciate my entry since I knew most of them were going for "pretty".  Settled on being a little radical, in the spirit of the film.

And my finished piece, composed digitally:

Michellewardmazine

I loved reading on the official site that Sofia Coppola "found inspiration from modern resources as well as the New Romantic pop music movement of the 1980s which was itself heavily influenced by 18th century ideals of extravagance.  Artists like Bow Wow Wow (I Want Candy) and Adam Ant celebrated glamour, luxurious fashion and hedonistic fun….."   She went on to say she wanted a playful version of history that reflects teenagers in a decadent time.

Great choice of using contemporary music in a film that wasn’t trying to be a historical documentary.  I think Sofia would get a kick out of Marie having a tattoo, don’t you?  It’s " X V I " for her husband Louis XVI of course!

EDIT:  See additional blog and web entries on the Marie zine:

What a beautiful post! Just love your Marie collage! I adored your page and when I first saw it, but have new found appreciation for it now that you’ve shown us the original photo of Drew and the magic you worked on it. A true masterpiece of wit and wonder! Marie rocks and so do you, Michelle!

Your amazing spin on MARIE has us all bowing down:
“Hail the Queen of Photoshop and Creativity”
The fantastic unmounted rubber that you designed and tossed in was fab along with Lynne’s sparkling wooden “M”and the delightful tags etc…
This is, once again, the reason that I do collaborations, creativity WAY outside the box…..thanks to Lynne, Anahata and my fellow Sisters of The Kingdom!

I love your contribution to Marie. Will Rolling Throne, perhaps, be a series? I am sure you could make the most mundance monarch rock star cool! I love the soundtrack to the movie. It made me want to bust out my lace frilly shirts and black pleated leather pants. As Sophia C, knows you can’t go wrong dancing at ball to “Hong Kong Garden.”

Brilliant! I love the article titles and Marie’s tattoo. I know from either Anahata’s or Melissa’s blog that the zine was intended to be just for the participants, but do you think you could persuade the others to share it with our little art world??

Michelle………I am totally blown away with this piece. I love your sense of humor and all of the little titles on it. I was busting out with laughter when i read “Palace Pooches Who let the dogs out”….love all of it. I just can’t stop looking at this….it’s awesome. I am picturing this in poster size in my artroom, lol…….but then i would be staring at it all the time and not getting anything done. I will just have to keep coming back to look at it here :o)
