find a penny….

Yesterday at the check out a shiny penny in my coin purse caught my eye.  It was then that I discovered a new 'tails' side.  In that same purse was a wheat wreath penny as well as several Lincoln Memorials.  Not only was it a moment of awareness of the new issue coin, but cool that I had the older one too (1945).

How many pennies have you forked over without looking at them?  Did you know there are now seven different backs in circulation?  The BiCentennial of Lincoln's birth (2009) brought four special issue tails.

I pay more attention to the postage stamp special releases than I do coins and bills.  I remember coming across the new design for the $20.  I was like, "what?  when did that happen?"  The large face and added graphics and color was jarring at first, looking more like foreign currency than U.S.  Have you ever visited a U.S. Mint?  We went to the one in Philadelphia a few years ago was a wonderful experience. Loved seeing the pennies being pressed.  Loved seeing the oversized original engraving sculptures of the images as well as the sketches.  Love American History.

Great post! I had no idea… super cool.
Every time I come home I feel the money has “changed” hah hah! I always get a little nervous if somebody is slipping me monopoly money instead of the real deal!

So cool to see all the pennies lined up. I have always been intrigued by the intricate ‘artwork’ on money. I especially like the foreign bills.

Wow, I had no idea there were 4 new backs for Lincoln’s bicentennial. I have used the one with the shield, though. I like that one.

    Good Morning Michelle-
I found this post interesting. Last June my husband and I went to a (postage) stamp show and they were giving the new Lincoln pennies out. I was so fasinated by them that I put the pennies aside to create a “dangle” with them. When the new “shield” back penny came out I added it to them. I did not think to add the other two….will need to do that. I will have to go through my penny jar to find two suitable candidates. I usually give all my wheat backs to my husband but one will not make it!
Thanks for the post, as always it inspires!
    Until later,
    Judy

Add me to all the others who said, “I had no idea!” Thanks for the heads up on the new tails. This brought back the funny story of my mom being convinced she had been given counterfeit money because she wasn’t aware of the new look they gave paper money awhile back. Thanks for a great post and the fond memory. xoxo

Are the 2009 ones rare? My entire life all I’ve ever seen are the wheat pennies, the Lincoln Memorial pennies, and occasionally I’ll see one of the newer ones with the shield but I’ve never seen the other four designs.
Also, how long does it take after a redesign for the value to go up? I’m aware that wheat pennies are still spent at face value (as evidenced by the fact that you still get them in change) but I recall reading that depending on the condition they can be worth 20¢ each to collectors. And does the age of an individual coin factor in? I have one from 1919, only one scratch prevents it from being classed as good condition, but I can’t find any value on it in any condition.
