can i vent for a sec?

I’m wondering if there is a new wave of soliciting taking place in the blogging environment.  Within the last two weeks I have been sent emails saying my blog has been reviewed and I was approved to host advertising for xyz companies.  Hello?  Advertising?  Has this happened to you?   Why in the blazes would I host advertising?  I don’t even advertise my OWN company, anywhere (with the exception of link on here, does that count?)

I was also offered to switch to a different blog service, and there was another place that offered a stat tracker that promised blahblahblah.  I won’t even put a sitemeter on my blog.  Who needs that much information?  I find those things an invasion of sorts.  Take a look at all the things a sitemeter will tell you, in addition to all the information they keep for themselves and you will cover your eyes and run the other way.  I mean, if you were Amazon you might want to know what web pages were visited most, and where they were from, and where they went next, and how long they stayed, but a personal blog?  Scary.

So to those who are out there "reviewing my blog" for advertising placement, no thanks.  Take me off your mailing list.  I don’t want your $.

I have some really wonderful things to share with you – stuff that came in the mail from friends, and from etsy.  I’ve set a goal for myself on a new format for this kind of sharing – hope to get it up during the weekend.  But for now, thanks for letting me vent.

And have a good weekend!

I don’t blame you for venting. There are solicitors everywhere, we’re swimming in them. Now, my blog’s not even public, but just one reason it isn’t yet is because I just don’t have the stomach for the inevitable solicitors. At work I’m known to be the one who can get rid of pesky people who come in time after time even though we’ve told them to stop. So, it sounds like I did some venting, too. This is a pet peeve of mine, I guess, so it struck a chord.
Anyway, I look forward to seeing the new goodies you have to share with us! Thanks for all that hard work, it’s great fun for your readers.

I don’t blame you at all. Your disclaimer on your Jaeger pic does raise a good point though; your endorsements of HIM and various Etsy sellers, etc. could be construed as advertising. However, even that isn’t quite right, because it’s stuff that you have a personal connection to, so of course you’re going to talk about it. Ah well, enjoy your Jaegermeister in HIM glasses. Can’t wait to see your new Cool Stuff format!

HA! I love this disclaimer. I came back to see the rest of your post and, well.. we have to be able to share what we love, don’t we? Without the vultures getting to us?
as the thief in Casablanca would say: Vultures! Vultures, everywhere!

    Good points, ALL.
When I heard that some people have the capacity to see who views their Blogs and more detail, I had the same reaction: : “HUH??!!!”
This stuff is personal, not fodder for a marketing study. If people want to know how often I visit their Blog, here’s an idea:
ASK. I’ll tell you, and no sugar coating, I promise.
You stay right up there on the Soap Box girl, and Tell IT.

Hey Michelle, I received a similar, if not the same, email on Friday. I don’t have any problem with a blogger posting ads on their blog. It’s not for me but then as the saying goes, to each his or her own. I find it wierd, though, that a company would contact me on behalf of a client who says he/she wants to advertise on my blog. I mean, why wouldn’t he/she contact me directly? Wierd. Seems kind of fishy.

Now I know what you and I will be drinking when we meet. When Ville and I get married, will you be my maid of honor…ooooo, did I just make your BP rise? Ha! Seriously, no…seriously. On a more serious note, I haven’t gotten any of the spam crap you have, I do have ads, do you still love me? And, I think you SHOULD advertise for GPP.

    Hi Michelle,
Seems these folks all of a sudden attacked many of us. The first one I replied back nicely, no thank you, but after 3 more it was kind of scary and creepy….

I got the same email, it got tossed into the delete file quicker than I could say “no advertising”! I know a lot of folks do have some advertising stuff on their blog, but it’s just not for me. That’s not why I’m here, it’s all about having fun, sharing my moments (which I haven’t done enough of lately), and pointing folks in the direction of what I find interesting-my own version of advertising for who I want to, like GPP:)

I think promoting your own interests Michelle are fine and absolutely justified and necessary to your blog. That is a big reason why people come to visit you – to see, listen, experience you in all directions. It’s what makes us understand where your coming from. I think we all have to be careful in promoting other advertising though – as it can really turn visitors off if they think your more oriented toward products vs. the individual. How can anyone really endorse something that is not personally a part of their own use or creation. Mcdc3s “Loves” MichelleWard’s Blog!

I hear you!! That must be most annoying. I don’t consider you telling me to check something out on etsy or a cool new pen or tape advertising!!! I am thrilled to be introduced to products that I may otherwise never think about. What is wrong with these people. I just watched enemy of the state again and it is really scary about how much big daddy is watching you and tracking where you visit on the net. Enough I say!

Agree x three. I peeked at my blog stats on my blog log and felt so freaked out I may never go back. The search query was goosebumping….some using my maiden name with middle name that even I nearly forgot…others were weird…the joy of living fully is not the joy of knowing fully.
    Still trying to forget,
    jodi
