about paint

I often get asked about what kind of acrylic paint I use.  My answer:  the cheap stuff.  Those who have taken classes with me know that I like to tease the *paint snobs* who only use Golden.  Don't get me wrong, that stuff is wonderful but for journaling purposes I have found it makes me crabby.  My pages stick to each other.  Nothing is more frustrating than to see a student work really hard on a great spread then suffer heartbreak when the pages stick together.  Give me the cheap stuff.  In my opinion, you can be more reckless and smather surfcaes with a abandon when you are working with less precious materials.  Golden (and other pricier brands) are lovely and appropriate for use in finer art but when you are playing around on pages I say go cheap.

Even the gesso I use is cheap – student grade, from Pearl.  $4.99 a quart.

I've also been asked about the scraping.  Similar to *dirty brushing*, is *dirty scraping*.  I covered some brushing effects in Crusade No. 29 where I point out that using two colors of paint on a brush makes for a more interesting surface coverage than a single color.  That's what I call dirty brushing.  The same can be done with scraping.  Pour out some gesso and acrylic colors onto a paper plate.  Dip your old credit card or scraping device into several colors and drag across the surface.  Be light handed and random.  Dip and scrape.  Repeat.  Repeat.  Repeat.  Let dry.  Do some more.  As your surface gets built up with paint you'll see some terrific textures emerge.

Only reason I like to use the “good” stuff in my journal is because I’m often auditioning color combos for “fine” art or using up the left overs off my palette.
That being said, I’m use other brands beside Golden, which is quite nice. I have a lot of Liquitex (more than Golden) and some Amsterdam Expert.
IfvI have pages that want to stick, then I place waxed paper or parchment between them. It’s not convenient, but it works.
Thanks for sharing your supplies. I do have a stash of craft paint from when I was doing more of that type of work & should get them out to play with, too.

Absolutely love this. Madly in love with painting right now, and the dry brush techniques you taught have held me in good stead, although the pieces I blogged this morning have no dry painting on them, ha. I am glad to hear that you play with cheaper paints because I find them a lifesaver in many instances, although I do have specific times when I use heavier bodied paints. Never use Golden, though. In some workshops that’s been all they’ve had, and it’s been quite a challenge to get things ready to take home in 3 or 4 hours. Sometimes the luscious depth of color is great when I have more time, though.
Okay, clearly I’ve blabbed only about myself. Thank you.

THanks for letting us know Michelle. I have both and use both but I do like the colours of the golden fluid acrylics and I dont use them that much so I think the little bottles will last a while.

I too use Golden but also use the cheaper stuff too. I think all these paints have their particular purpose in art. When I have had the pages sticking together problem in the past, I use Dorland’s Wax Medium and this solves the problem instantly!
I must say though, in the Golden range of colours there’s nothing better than Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold & Dioxazine Purple for a beautiful rust colour! mmmmmmmmm

Ooooh, hey my mom and I have a verrrry old stash of paints in the same brands in your pic! Most of them purchased at a craft store that no longer exists… heh…
Love the technique, I’m going to have to try that! Sometime…

    Good morning Michelle,
I have the feeling you wrote this post for me 🙂
I really like this background and I hope to be able to create a bit more in the coming holidays : days fly by so fast these days.
I love my class and my children and enjoy every day with them, but it’s hard work for the moment with 9 children in the class with a severe mental and physical handicap… so the past weeks my energy is gone at the end of the day… So, not much creating time left… ( but I DID create something I really like with my children for their “New years letter” : hope to post about it this evening. THEIR background is unimitatable…)
Me too I have mostly cheap paints, only bought some golden stuff for Julie Prichards workshop. They are thinner and smoothier than the cheap ones, but you’re right for some backgrounds these cheap paints are the best use.
I love your background here and the journalpages in your previouspost. Wish I could try them myself now…:)
    greetings from belgium

When I am doing collages for fun and other “fun” things like tag art I usually use the cheap stuff, or what ever I find up in my studio. I have been known to buy paint REALLY cheap at yard sales….. for just a nickle or dime you can use it for fun, if you like the color buy more.
I use Golden mediums for some items that I want to have a special finish.
But I say, use what you like, or love and don’t worry so much where it is the best ever if it works for you!!
I like the idea of slathering and scraping for backgrounds. I am working on a glue book now so this isn’t within “my rules”. But I will try it out soon.

Hey girlfriend! For real, the cheap stuff doesn’t stick in your journals? Have you found anything to put onto sticky pages to prevent the sticking? I’m thinking workable fixative or a clear spray cover of some sort (having a brain fart, can’t think of the name, but very similar to workable fixative)… I’m reaching a journaling class in April and guess I need to do some experimenting with the “cheap stuff”! Happy New Year!
