for the record

There was some chatter that arose after Tim Holtz made his announcements for the Stampers Anonymous new stamp releases for CHA last week.  He made it clear he is not taking credit for designing the "Classic Favorites" collection – he simply chose his favorites from the archives of red rubber wood mounted stamps done by other artists.  These are being re-released as cling vinyl.  As a former designer for Stampers Anonymous, many friends and fans of the line have emailed me about it.  I'll bet there are many of you who are not clear which ones I designed so I thought I would go on record with a set of illustrations below.  At a later date I will put together my entire Stampers Anonymous portfolio of images that have been selling for thirteen years….for the record.

Questions have been asked as to why Tim's name is on the collection and not the original artists.  To be fair, the early artists never had their names on the stamps.  It was not the policy of the company or the original owner.  In fact, the new owner of Stampers Anonymous may not be entirely clear who can claim the designs.  I can only speak up for myself, go on record, and point out which ones were done by me – especially since many of you have inquired.  I have to say it's pretty cool that after many, many years, these images are still considered "favorites".

UPDATE:  unfortunately there's a Part Two, click here, FOR THE RECORD…..AGAIN.

    Good Morning Michelle-
I recognized most of the stamps you claim as yours, there were a few that I wasn’t quite sure about but do recognize your hand. It is funny how even before I knew who you were I gravitated to your stamps and then to your work in Somerset Studio. You have made a difference in the artistic road I have been traveling.
Congratulations on still having so many stamps that are favorites!
    Until later,
    Judy

Blow me away Michelle. I didn’t know that a number of these stamps were your designs… some yes, but not all. You are one hell of an artist. Can I have your autograph when I see you next? xo

    I am so happy you shared tis Michelle, as the Dragonfly is one of my all time favs. You must have done the Gerber Daisy too, :). And I still have the 3 original sheets of yours I bought at Artiology in 2002. {{{XO}}}

Too bad you seem to have Artists Block *wink*….
OMG, how prolific can you BE??!!!!…….
Cool that you clarified this situation and took the High Road. That’s so YOU.
Long may these images seduce stampers World Wide!

They deserve to be enduring favorites, for they are certainly classics. I believe I would have been able to identify pretty much every one that was yours. Good stuff lasts. xo

Well, they have always been favorites of mine. It is a shame that you, and the other artists, were never named on your designs. It’s great that a new generation of stampers can enjoy the images, but it would be so much better if they could be inspired by the artists as well. My two cents. 😉

It comes as a complete surprise that I own some stamps designed by you! Really good to know!

Glad to see which ones are yours – some of them I recognized as your style immediately, and others I wasn’t sure. I do wish they’d change the label so it’s not so misleading. I did read Tim’s blog post and even I missed his acknowledgment of other artists, and they can’t assume that everyone reads Tim’s blog.
I also wish artists were always credited for their designs, though, so my track record with wishes on this topic isn’t so good…

Not only favorites, but stamps recognized as your unique style by so many. For the record. 😉
Good to see older good things resurfacing to be loved some more.
    Big Hugs !

    Michele,
When I first started reading this post I thought you were going to say something about the stamps Tim did with Mario III because when I saw the “blueprint” stamps I thought of you- not that they look anything like yours but that you did the blueprint thing first. I adore Tim and his creativity and what he has brought to the industry so I’m not complaining… just commenting.
Then when I read the post I hit my head with a big ol’ “DUH”. I have the Dragonfly Legend (love it) and never realized it was yours. I”m so happy these images are coming back and even happier now that I know they are YOURS. I love everything you do

Oh Michelle I have so many of your SA Stamps! Yours are my favourites. On another note I also have to thank you for my favourite shoes. The “icon” ones. You were wearing them when you caught up with Judy Wilkenfeld and I fell in love. I searched ebay and there was a pair in my size! Unbelievable! They have walked a thousand miles since then!! xxx

  16. Lizbeth Avatar

I got a little mad on your behalf that Tim was selling your (and others’) stamps when I started to read your post. I am so glad you decided to show what is your original work. Your stamps are so unique and wonderful, Michelle. Congratulations on your success with them, and may you have many more successful years!

  17. Rosie Avatar

Wow, turns out you are the talent behind some of my absolute favourites! I believe that your name should be on as designer – that only makes sense!

I love the stamps Tim Holtz’s selection of classics, his favorite stamps from the past! I am so glad to know thta you designe almost all of them! I already own a few but anyway it would be fun for your name and other atrtists name appear also!
    great work!

    Hello Michelle,
When i saw the release of these stamps on tims blog i commented on his blog that i thought some of them were your designs….
I was right!!! Just didn’t know there were so many!
I understand that in the beginning the names of the artists were not always added, but i do really hope you still have some rights on these designs. Tim will sell looots of these, so i hope you get credit and you get a part of the money as the designer..
You may indeed be proud your designs are classics, but proud alone don’t get your children fed…
I’m a tim fan,but i’m also a michelle fan and i’m sure stamers anonymous knows who the designers are… It would be good that the names of all the original designers are on the stampsheet and then it’s ok for me that tim brings them out as his favorite classics..
    Greetings from belgium

    Okay, seriously.
You only designed about a thousand of the stamps?!
These are so stunning. I hadn’t heard of this hubbub, but if you hadn’t claimed them here I’d have taken credit.

A stunning collection Michelle. And so good to know exactly which ones are yours. Thanks for setting the record straight!

I finally just caught up with this blog post. I still use many of your stamps and have loved using them for years. They are timeless in my book. I am happy they have been re-released so that others may enjoy them, too, and so that I can use them if/when I do book #2. THank you, Michelle for your talent and the grace in your response to this situation.

  35. Stephanie Rodgers Avatar

Thanks for clearing that up Michelle. These are all beautiful stamps, and you SHOULD get the credit!

  36. Cathy Yamashita Avatar

Thanks for posting this! I own many of these stamps and they are among ones that I would NEVER consider getting rid of! They are timeless and I love them as much as when I first purchased them.

  37. Carol P Avatar

Thanks for clarifying this. I knew they weren’t Tim’s designs but I am glad to know who’s they are. I have many of the ones that you have tagged as yours and they are still some of my favorites too!

  38. Kimjolley Avatar

Just a little comment about your images: I started stamping in 1999 or 2000. Some of my earliest purchases of collage images were yours. I still own all of them today and will never part with them. I have used them in countless ways with clay, paper casting & regular old rubber stamping. LOVE them just as much now, as I did then. I still follow you, because your artwork inspires me. Your blog also turned me on to HIM. Thanks for that!

  39. Marva Avatar

I didn’t know these were your designs!!! The Anonymous collage is one of my favorites!!! I know i have several of your designs, so cool to know who they belong to!

  40. Laura Spano Avatar

Oh, how cool. I have several of those images. That dragonfly and harlequins are my all time favorites. So glad you posted this.

I’m so glad you linked to this…. I have a TON of your designs and had no idea… hoping the record is straight.

  42. teri Avatar

I’m more than a little confused about how one person can re-issue someone else’s work without credit. I’d love to understand that.

  43. Jackie P Neal Avatar

I had no idea until a friendly artist set the record straight- have always loved your stamps and always will!!
So very sorry that SA has chosen to take the route they did- shame shame…
