I am so touched by the number of friends who have contacted me about another release of Stampers Anonymous "Classics", as found on Tim Holtz's blog, as they include many designs created by me. Originally released on wood mounted red rubber, the company has chosen to re-release as cling-mount. Since they state they do not know who designed them there are no artist credits given, so I will go on the record and claim the images designed by me, more than ten years ago. As I said before, it's nice to know that the archives can bring forward images that are still deemed relevant….aka classics.

If you missed it, my July 2012 post (click here) illustrates my claim of images from the first sets of Tim Holtz Stampers Anonymous "Classic Favorites". Thumbnail reference below:

According to Tim's site, these will be released at CHA next week. I've highlighted the images done by me, sets of images borrowed from his site without seeking permission.

And here is the list of images, currently available at StampersAnonymous, that were created by me:

New followers of StampersAnonymous don't know the history, and don't know there were alot of artists who contributed to the line. Back in the day, it was alot of fun and I know we made an impact on the industry. I have to admit it kinda hurts in the pit of my stomach that my images may be misinterpreted as coming from Tim, even though he is not trying to give that impression. It's likely that his followers will never see my post but it feels good to go on record and present them here.

EDIT: Since this post aired, Tim has updated his blog linking to here so that anyone who is curious could click through and see my claim to the images. Although I never was an anonymous contributor, I appreciate his gesture yesterday, and that his name is not on the packaging this time. I also appreciate the support offered to me privately, in the comments, and on fb. I never intended this post to be a platform for insulting anyone – just felt that I could be heard here, amongst friends. So let's keep it friendly. Thx.

Hi Michelle. Sadly, I never had the wood versions, back then rubber stamps into New Zealand were like hen’s teeth! And prices as though coated in gold, thanks to living at the postal ends of the earth…
I’m glad you have posted about this again, as soon as I saw the release I knew many of the images were yours.
I know Tim is not trying to take credit, but it might have been wise if they’d just said “hey, these are not Tim’s designs’, because it does have to hurt, despite knowing your designs are still favs after so many years.

Hi, Michelle! I think it’s good to put this out there to clear the record. They really are classics.
I have so many of these!!! I especially have loved the large letters with inspiring words and all the dragonfly and “specimen” genre of stamps. I use them still and appreciate you so much.

I suspect that perhaps someone has already told TH the origin of those images. If not, I would be more than happy to do so. Apparently you don’t get royalties from re-releases, that’s unfortunate. I also find it disappointing that SA doesn’t have reference to the artist that created those images. Yup, that has to sting. They’re awesome images. And, I do have some of them in wood mounted. I have several of these wood mount stamps They always were, and remain today the Best of the Best! I, like others, can spot your work a mile away. You know and I know, someone there has a mind like a steel trap….they know who these are by, I’m sure. Anyone can copy someone elses images and make a stamp out of it. It takes a TRUE ARTIST to draw one and make it a Timeless masterpiece. You did that.

He is well known for doing this. Ask him about faux soldering which was a technique I GAVE to suze Weinberg and he tried to claim. Even when he was shown my class handout from a year prior! He takes bits and pieces from many many artists and NEVER gives ANY credit. Do I sound bitter? Yes and it’s because up until that happened I had felt that the stamping community was one of the most giving and sharing of communities . And by the way, I own numerous of your wood stamps and cherish them all, as I know WHO designed them.

Last time this happened I was really angry but bit my tongue. I feel even stronger about it this time around. I have a greater understanding of artists rights and licensing. To know Tim slapping his brand on it and both getting recognised for the artwork (especially by Tim fans who don’t know the images previous history) and getting paid for it (while the actual artists get no payment at all) is atrocious. For Stampers Annonymous to think this is okay says a lot about their business choices. And if Tim had the choice of saying yes or no (keeping in mind he may not have), he should have said no too.
Unfortunately, it is becoming more and more just about the money and how many products can be churned out by some of the big name companies. – business can be ethical, moral and profitable. Big hugs to you Michelle. You are handling it with dignity and class (I’m sure in private there are hurt feelings and probably anger and confusion too). Truly a lady.

i have only two of your wooden stamps – the mariposa and the dragonfly, THE classic one, which i love like on the first day and always knew it was your´s. i couldn´t afford more on wood, as shipping to germany costs a fortune.
i totally can understand your frustration. and i personally think it is not o.k. of tim merely writing a little note on his blog… and going on to take advantage for himself.

I saw the release on Tim’s blog and I recognized your stamps right away, Michelle. I was surprised SA and Tim did it again! I also noticed that his name wasn’t on the collections this time, but people still think they are his stamps. I can’t believe SA doesn’t have records of who designed what stamps. It’s good that you have this forum to rectify some of this. I realize a lot of people won’t read this but since Tim had the courtesy to put a link on his blog maybe some will come over and see who really is responsible for these beautiful designs. Yep – been around for a while and have some on wood. Business – all business – can seem to be cut throat at times – especially in a business where the product being produced can be so very personal (art). I’m a fan of all of the above (you, Tim and Stampers). Michelle your art is undoubtedly some of the most classic images we see out there. They have been, and I’m sure will continue to be, some of the most loved and used images in our craft. But I have to keep in mind that with this industry, unlike others, we are blessed to know who the architect of the images are. In most fields, the creator of the work is never known. Most of us create for the company who gives us a paycheck everyday and never receive recognition even the first time, let along for the lifetime the company uses it after we are long gone. Thanks to you and to all in this industry for dealing with a somewhat touchy situation with such grace!

Yes I have several of your designs on wood mounts! My favorite is the entomology image. I remember before I bought it, I saw it in (I think) a Somerset magazine (Stsmpington publication) and Ijust had to have it! They had used the image on a pin box or as part of a field kit someone designed. Imay have also ordered sheets of red rubber from your site years ago, also…. of birds and eggs, maybe? At any rate, I love your designs!

I feel saddened to read this and most of the comments. I found this via a twitter post from an art company in the uk. Firstly I’ve never thought that both of these releases was Tim’s work nor do I feel that he took credit for them as whenever I’ve read anything that he has said about them that they were not his work but was asked to pick his favorites from classic pieces of work . Which I agree that they absolutely are and great work Michelle. The issue of getting paid for the re-releases are surely between you and SA and the basis on how you sold your art work in the first place? With regard to acknowledging you as the artist, even if there are no old records, it is really a small world and that SA could have found the artists with a little effort, and I’m sorry for your hurt and upset. I have sooo many of these wood mounted. I donated almost all of my thousands of rubber stamps when I moved a year ago but I kept all of my Stampers Anonymous stamps. I bought them at The Creative Block in Cleveland from the original SA owner Ginny Carter and her son Tim. The store had lots of Michelle’s work on display. I think this stamp line has been sold twice. I don’t even know what company is producing them but shame on them for not giving you credit for creating these designs.

When Tim and SA re-released them on cling I never had the impression they were Tims images or that he was tring to take credit for them. I always wondered who the artists were. I have the big collage block (anonymous Collage)!
A friend of mine also have a few.
I live in Cape Town, South Africa, and at the time the R/$ exchange rate was high, so we paid quite a bit for the stamps plus the postage, etc. Couldn’t buy many either. Was worth every cent though!
Well, I immediately recognized them! Yes, your artwork travelled the world.
I haven’t done much stamping lately, but now I will have to go and find those!
And yes, I still love that collage! It is great that they made a re-appearance for more artists & crafters to enjoy your talent!

I have most of these designs in wood mounted stamps, I’m a fan of yours from waaay back, and have unmounted Green Pepper Press stamps too, your work is always wonderful, and I’m still using those stamps! The designs are timeless.
I’m also a great fan of Tim’s work, and Stampers Anonymous as a company. When the first sets of ‘Classics’ were released, Tim made it clear that these were not his designs, but rather a curated selection of classic images from SA’s past being reissued as cling stamps, and the same with this latest issue. Some newer stampers might have assumed they were designed by Tim, but he didn’t claim that, and those of us who have been around for a while knew very well that these were Michelle Ward’s classic designs. Fabulous to see them reissued in such a great format. I realize that if you sold the designs outright initially you have no claim to sales of the wood mounted stamps sold since, but since they are being reissued in a new format it would be good to see you compensated in some way, either percentage of sales or a lump sum, as a gracious gesture for the use of these very recognized and popular designs.
All business aspects aside, I’m delighted to see your timeless designs released in this current format, it will generate a whole new cadre of Michelle Ward fans (now that your work is being credited, hopefully SA will issue a statement to that effect also).

Funny, today I was looking for a stamp and ran across your unmounted Architecture set that I purchased at Artiology many years ago. It made me think of you and then I saw this post. I own the Synchronicity (:)) wood mount and actually never realized you had designed it. Stamp companies should list artist credit on the stamp itself. It’s a shame that you are not receiving compensation or at least credit. I hope SA will re-think their decision.

Thank you Michelle for claiming your designs. It’s awesome to know who designed the stamps that I have so many of. I have ordered stamps directly from your website and from Stampers Anonymous over the years. I prefer red rubber for my stamps and hope Stampers Anonymous keeps producing red rubber stamps. I own several of your designs on wood, we carried them in our store many years ago and they were very popular.
I think it is sad, strange and condescending that just because the company name is Stampers Anonymous some people seem to assume that the artist who design these images wished to be or remain “anonymous”. That is not how I remember it, I could be mistaken but I thought that the printed catalogues that contained the images did have the artists names included. I always thought that the word Anonymous referred to the people buying and using the stamps. I mean really think of some of the other words that proceed the word anonymous, does it refer to the user or the manufacturer? When this all happen the first time I was thinking it was a sad situation and now that it has happen again well what can you say, or think? It is more than likely about the money bottom line. Sad.
I am very happy that again you posted the situation on your blog and created awareness.

Michelle I have always loved your distinct style and have been a fan for many years from faraway Hong Kong.
I am wondering why SA has the right to reprint your work without giving you credit or money. Can you stop them and get them reprinted by another company that pays you and respects your rights as an artist? Can you get them printed yourself and sell them online? I think they are stealing if they don’t pay a royalty and pretend they didn’t know who designed them! Of course they are yours! Get your designs produced in China! Dove of the East has struggled on a long stubborn road and is finally about to launch in China. The point is never give up! You are a hero to me and many others! sadly, I was not yet into scrapbooking in 1999, but started with digi in about 2006 and now do traditional as well. Your images are outstanding and I can see why the Tim HOLtz line wants to release them. I do hope they do the right thing and pay you some copyright fees or royalties or whatever is standard in the industry. Personally, I shall boycott the images, sadly, as they are truly lovely.

Hi Judy, I’ll explain it to you. Stamp companies treat artists like crap. Never mind they wouldn’t have a business without us, but they notoriously pay late or not at all. Both big companies and small. They also put legal talk into contracts that say things like – oh if we sell them at a sale price you get no money…if we re-release them we make no money. Etc etc.

I’m sad for you. Take pride that you are the original and not the copier at least. Looking at all the images you tagged that are yours, I realize I have almost all of them. I don’t have those cool chess pieces though. When collage stamping started coming out and changed how we started viewing stamping as art work and not craft work, these images of yours were the #1 must have stamps. I remember waiting for some of those that I asked our local stamp store to special order for me and they were on back order forever. It is always confusing to us (the consumers) when we see new stamps but they look familiar and then it turns out they are re-releases. Take Acey Duecy. One of the oldies but goodies companies. I probably over the years bought most of their line of stamps. Loved their images. Years later, they went out of business, and I think, it was Judi Kins bought some or all of their images. Then Judi Kins put out stamps using their original images but miniaturized the images and made new stamps that were made of several images collaged on one stamp or changed the size and re-released them. I knew they looked familiar but didn’t realize it till I got them home and was organizing them. Well, since I already have your stamps I certainly won’t need to buy Tim’s sets. I’m a Tim fan. So, this is going to be crummy for those of us who love it when Tim releases new stamps and products because these aren’t new for me so I won’t be purchasing them, not out of spite but because I already have the originals. Why is he releasing these anyway? They don’t even seem like Tim’s style. Well, again sorry for this event in your life. Thank you for the great stamps you created. They still are some of my most used stamps that get used often. They are not just sitting in a drawer gathering dust. Mine are well inked! Thanks!!

I too have at some point or still do own most of those images!! I loved them. Thank you for designing them. I think the only way artists make money are by commercialising them themselves rather than through a company. But then you have to deal with all the manufacturing, buyers and marketing etc so not easy. There are alot of stampers that don’t respect copyright either and are happy to say well I bought the stamp so now I can sell what I produce with it and get annoyed when artists get annoyed!! SO its half a dozen of one and 6 of another!

I wish I had more of the originals, but back in the day our $ was not good and the heavy wooden stamps were expensive to post. I was amazed and wowed at the talent that could create these gorgeous graphic designs and symbols. Tim Holtz should be ashamed of himself. The rubber stamp/mixed media is very small and you are VERY BIG in it. We all know, how come he “doesn’t”??

I hadn’t seen his blog yet, since I’m way behind on blog reading, but wow I’m shocked that they released another batch with the same lack of attribution. Glad Tim is acknowledging it now, at least. I never got any of the early SA stamps, and a large part of me doesn’t want to buy the “Classic Favorites” because of the misleading labeling, but there are some of your designs that I would love to have… I would’ve recognized most of your designs on my own, but some of them I wouldn’t have caught. Michelle, I’m so glad you posted this! I think it’s essential to credit artists and contributors wherever possible – not least because that way people can find more of their work if they want to support the artist.
Is there any chance you could reissue these images yourself through GPP? I’d much rather buy them from you, especially if SA isn’t going to give you credit or royalties.

i very much love you’re stamps and because Tim does them again it means i can buy them in the Netherlands! Buying things in the USA is a rather expensive way so this made it easy to my.
But…here in the Netherlands he would be obligated to do his very best to try and find the owner of these stamps…i find it strange that the compagny did not work harder to at least place your name on the stamps..i did not know you made them…
But hey are lovely and i am thankfull i can now buy them a lot easier.

Hi Michelle! I have many of your wood mounted stamps. Mariposa and the Dragonfly and many others. I realized how many last year when you posted which ones were yours. Your woodmounted classics were and are my favourites to buy. I have always been frustrated by the designers names not being on the stamps, I couldn’t understand why until last year. I am thrilled that your classics are being re-released, but, I think you should be paid royalties for it. Good for you claiming your beautiful designs. Ginny said last year on her blog, she knows by looking at the designs who designed what, but she didn’t give credit originally either, no names on the stamps. I am glad Tim did give you credit and a link on his blog. I came over from the link. I wish people knew that they can purchase the woodmounted of your designs from Stampers Anonymous, I order the ones I want through my local paper arts store. By listing your designs here, that has made it easier for me to know which ones are yours. Although I can recognize your designs, by your beautiful, detailed styling.

I have always loved Stampers’ Anonymous Designs and I may have some unmounted images that I bought at rubber stamp expos in Portland, OR many years ago. I am so happy to hear that you are finally getting the credit you deserve for your images. I love Tim Holtz and am glad to hear that he is giving you credit since it is certainly due. I think people forget that the images that the rest of us use to create our art was designed by someone originally. I am glad that Tim took the hint and acknowledged you on his blog, though I agree with Julie that it should NOT have been afterthought, especially the second time around. And you shouldn’t have had to initiate and take credit for yourself. It is encouraging, though, that this release is just called “Stampers Anonymous Classics” and not “Tim Holtz Stampers Anonymous Classics” like the previous release. I would recognize most of your designs anywhere, but a lot of people wouldn’t.
I don’t have any of the old wood mounted ones, though I do have a couple of ones that you did for (I think) Stampington in the Tea and Coffee collection. These classics are beautiful, though I have to admit that your GPP sets are more my style 🙂

Gorgeous images, Michelle! Yes, I have a few of the old wood-mounted ones, bought from my long-closed local paper arts/mixed media store (Love Letters, one of the checkerboard images, and probably more!). And as someone else in the comments section mentioned, I believe I also recognize another artist’s work in this group (as sold on Stampington years ago). It pains me that you were not given credit, or royalties, or anything. You are definitely taking the high road, and I don’t know if I could. Hopefully SA will take it into their own hands to make things right. Maybe with some urging from someone as prominent as Tim Holtz – he has a real opportunity here to use his influence to change the way this industry treats its artists.

I have a number of your original wood-mounted stamps and they are among my favorites still. I’d think you had copyright of the images you created, even if you can’t control what the company does with them. I was shocked when Tim Holtz released his initial favorites collections and had to read carefully to realize that he wasn’t claiming he originated them. But I’d think a little research would have revealed the original artist–they copied them from something! Do you know if the other artists in “Tim’s” collections are aware of this too? I feel funny about buying the rereleases now.

Suzi, I’m sorry you have had bad experiences with your stamp endeavors. The companies I currently work for are nothing like you describe. I’m kind of surprised to see you chime in here as I believe it’s the first comment you’ve ever left here.
Judy, when I designed these images it was a different owner, a different policy, and nobody ever thought there would even be something known as a re-release. These images have always been available on wood mount, the new re-release is on cling and I’m simply taking the opportunity to claim my designs through these illustrations.

Kybarb, cool to know you have some of the stamps. Back in the day they didn’t put names on stamps, but I believe our names were in one of the catalogues. The previous owner could tell you exactly who did each image, and she would freely tell you if you wanted to know.

Michelle, the very cool scripted pear is by Michele Monet – she also has a huge list of designs in the wood mounted, and some of the ‘classics”. Michele made a huge impact on the way stamps could be designed and used. I believe some JVO stamps are still available thru Stampington, but I don’t think she was ever on the SA team.

They obviously heard us when we were upset that the last series did carry the name, even though Tim was not claiming to design them, just selected them as his favorites. And to be fair, he’s communicated that he is not receiving royalty on either series of re-releases.

Under the original owner we were always given verbal credit, and it was never a secret, nor were we anonymous. You’re correct, the artist’s names were in one of the catalogues and/or supplements.

I read all this with interest Michelle and can I add my 10 cents worth?
I own a store in Australia and I have brought some of the SA classics in already to sell.
I recognised a couple of the designs as yours and I have been consistent in telling my customers they are not by TH.
Sadly what has happened to you with neither recognition nor compensation appears to be quite prevalent.
I can tell you that from a retailers point of view there is an obscene amount of misinformation and total lack of communication that appears to be running through the industry.
Woo and schmooze like crazy to get your account and then – no responsibility whatsoever!
You have a problem? We’ll get back to you ….next century.
It’s all about the hype! ( I won’t even start on Facebook, blogging and the gazillion “look at us” things that go on)
I am weeding – at cost to me, the worst of this out of my store and I will continue to not stock products and brands that are disreputable and disrespectful.
I was told by a big noise that to be successful it is dog eat dog world out there.
Well, I happen to love my dogs and will do all in my small world I can, to behave ethically, always giving credit where it is due.
You can be assured that the correct information when the next sets of stamps come in will be shared.
The design of yours that has been part of my love for stamping from the very first time I saw it – could not buy it though, is “Dragonfly Legend”.
It is such a privilege to now say I still love it and own it.
It would be even better to know you were being fairly compensated for it.
I look forward to reading that this ugly mess has been graciously attended to and that you are rewarded with fairness.
It is wrong when talent, passion and intellectual rights are ignored for the sake of $$$’s.

Hi Michelle,
I have always loved your SA images, and many of them have an honoured place in my rather vast collection of stamps. Seeing them in the new release, I am falling in love with them all over again. Will I get the new cling versions? Very possibly (I am running out of room for more wood mount stuff!) I am hoping that credit will be given properly now (how could they not know who designed stuff in their catalogue?), these are AWESOME images.

Seeing all the comments, thought I wouldn’t add to them, but since I’ve been away over the holidays, I haven’t read your blog for awhile, and am now seeing all these “re-releases”..well, darn! Had to add my two cents worth. When I was out visiting a cousin in Boise, Idaho last year, or was it sooner?? Anyhow, she was showing me online the new stamps by TH. I looked, and I said “Whoa, wait a minute. These aren’t NEW and they aren’t by TH. I was happy to let her know who designed them and that I already had most of them on wood mounts. No matter how many they re-release, those of us who have been around since the early days of stamping, will always know and recognize the original designers. I still reach for those early ones that you did, and am happy that I have so many.

Hi Michelle, I too have some of these stamps on the old wood mounts- Moon Collage, Breathe and the one on the third sheet in the first batch, with all the little squares, to name a few. All gorgeous images that need little or no work to make a stunning card.
Quite horrified to read the story behind this-I’ve always been a Tim Holtz fan, and I find it shocking to see his name involved with something like this. I think like most people, I would have expected credit to be given to the original artists involved, even if it was only a listing on the packaging. To make no mention of them does make it look as though he was intended to be seen as the originator of the designs. Can you imagine the fall-out if someone else was to do this with some of his old designs? I’m pleased to read that his blog now gives you credit for your work, maybe SA will behave a little better in the future!

Hi Laura. Thanks for chiming in about the dragonfly. Still a fave of mine too. The Create proposals weren’t due until January 5, so it may be another few weeks until classes are posted. We haven’t rec’d word on acceptance yet – crossing fingers! Hope to see you there!

Oh my gosh….I love love love your designs. I have lost count of how many of the wood mounted stamps that I have. Though many of my ‘collection’ have never seen ink….YOUR stamps are well stained. The letter stamps are my all time faves, but the dragonfly – omg – what more is there to say other than fabulous! I am pleased to know your name, your talents, and that you are getting credit well due!

I find it “interesting” that Tim Holtz likes to say the original Stampers Anonymous artists are unknown to the current owner. When Ted Cutts bought the company he received the artists’ contracts with each and every image they designed attached to the contract. At least they had the good grace to leave Tim’s name off the packaging this time.

I have several of your original stamps on wood…at least the B and the D. In fact, I recently made a checkbook cover using the B(reathe) and have it as my Facebook banner. I have loved using these stamps and kept them as I have culled through the years. Found you with the most recent stencil girl hop. Love your stencils and what you did with the stencils. I have many of these stamps in wood from “back in the day” and, yes, they are classics – still my go-tow! I am so glad to know that they were your designs. I was upset when SA first reissued these saying they were “anonymous” artists – surely they had records of the designers and, if not, shame on them! And I’m glad to see they’ve removed Tim’s name on the packaging, although the inference is still there. Tim never did say they were his, but lots of people assumed so, especially with his name front and center. Good for you to take credit for your work!

YES! I have a LOT of your images that were (at one time) mounted on wood. I removed all my rubber from wood a few years ago, but still have those stamps! Wow! I can’t believe how many of these images I own! Guess I’ve always loved your work, even when I didn’t know it was yours. I first saw your stamps on Stampington. Ummm…maybe you should let Stampers Anonymous know these are your designs! Shoot, if I had that portfolio, I would claim it. I can’t really believe that a little effort wouldn’t have revealed to SA who did that work. I consider these images some of my go to classics.
